I exactly follow this advice unless I get lazy on zincolns.
Here ya go.
How I hunt, what I do and the logic behind it all.

Everyone learns to do it there way,I got real tired of digging everything long ago with any detector so I have looked for ways to cut back on that and still find the good stuff.
Pretty successful, might miss some things here and there but I am more rested and still more than satisfied.
When you are new digging a ton is really the best way to learn so don't lose heart or patience...you are doing it right and it probably won't be like this forever as you learn and gain experience.
As far as gold here is what I know.
With my thumb up and thumb back down method pretty much all gold I have come across with my Tesoros have all been solid, repeatable hits from more than one way and all "came in" with very little or no noise or even clicks before they firmed up...they were just...there.
Coins and other good targets usually do this too, not all but most.
All except nickels, that is, those coins are just weird for some reason.
I usually dig the solid stuff and leave the rest in the ground assuming it's trash.
Not in stone, deep stuff can act differently, even if in my experience they never have but gold rings can act strange and like trashy signals under the right conditions.
The great thing is separation and recovery abilities around trash is more than superb on the Compadre so those are my rules and I usually abide by them.
I can't hear any difference on gold from foil to the tab area, they all sound to me like all good targets like coins and such, solid, full, sharp ends.
When it comes to large gold rings that come in at zinc like big 10k class rings and maybe some of the really high karat stuff, (which I haven't dug with a Tesoro...yet), those gold rings are different and I mean waaay different.
Two class rings I found, one with my Vaq, one with my Compadre, both came in like a zinc cent at the 3:00 position on the disc knob but that was not all.
Both these signals were also solid, clear sharp ends and all that but in addition they were extra clear sounding, like the sweetest most perfectly cast bell you ever heard, with a slightly longer sustaining extra sweet sweet sounding tone unlike I never heard before.
The first time it happened on my Compadre I didn't know what this different sound was and I just thought I was digging a zincoln.
The second time I heard that sound was with my Vaq and this time I knew 100% that I was swinging over gold, the only time this ever happened, and it actually rocked me back on my heels a bit when it happened.
If you hear this rare sound once evidently you will remember it forever and every time I go out with a Tesoro my number one goal is to hear that sound again.
Once more would be lucky and great, if it happens to me more than once before I hang up this hobby I would feel blessed.
Hope it happens to you sometime, too, and if it ever does you will instantly understand what I mean.
