Church of the Compadre...

I exactly follow this advice unless I get lazy on zincolns.

Here ya go.
How I hunt, what I do and the logic behind it all.

Everyone learns to do it there way,I got real tired of digging everything long ago with any detector so I have looked for ways to cut back on that and still find the good stuff.
Pretty successful, might miss some things here and there but I am more rested and still more than satisfied.
When you are new digging a ton is really the best way to learn so don't lose heart or patience...you are doing it right and it probably won't be like this forever as you learn and gain experience.

As far as gold here is what I know.
With my thumb up and thumb back down method pretty much all gold I have come across with my Tesoros have all been solid, repeatable hits from more than one way and all "came in" with very little or no noise or even clicks before they firmed up...they were just...there.
Coins and other good targets usually do this too, not all but most.
All except nickels, that is, those coins are just weird for some reason.

I usually dig the solid stuff and leave the rest in the ground assuming it's trash.
Not in stone, deep stuff can act differently, even if in my experience they never have but gold rings can act strange and like trashy signals under the right conditions.
The great thing is separation and recovery abilities around trash is more than superb on the Compadre so those are my rules and I usually abide by them.

I can't hear any difference on gold from foil to the tab area, they all sound to me like all good targets like coins and such, solid, full, sharp ends.
When it comes to large gold rings that come in at zinc like big 10k class rings and maybe some of the really high karat stuff, (which I haven't dug with a Tesoro...yet), those gold rings are different and I mean waaay different.
Two class rings I found, one with my Vaq, one with my Compadre, both came in like a zinc cent at the 3:00 position on the disc knob but that was not all.
Both these signals were also solid, clear sharp ends and all that but in addition they were extra clear sounding, like the sweetest most perfectly cast bell you ever heard, with a slightly longer sustaining extra sweet sweet sounding tone unlike I never heard before.
The first time it happened on my Compadre I didn't know what this different sound was and I just thought I was digging a zincoln.
The second time I heard that sound was with my Vaq and this time I knew 100% that I was swinging over gold, the only time this ever happened, and it actually rocked me back on my heels a bit when it happened.
If you hear this rare sound once evidently you will remember it forever and every time I go out with a Tesoro my number one goal is to hear that sound again.
Once more would be lucky and great, if it happens to me more than once before I hang up this hobby I would feel blessed.

Hope it happens to you sometime, too, and if it ever does you will instantly understand what I mean.

All this Compadre talk has got me going.
I am going to throw a new battery in mine right now and walk up to my very well hunted neighborhood park with extremely difficult soil and conditions.
No matter what I find I am sure I will have a great time...if I find something cool well, watch this space.

Aaaaaaaaaaannnnndddddd....success!

Picked up a bullet, some kind of piece of copper with some iron attached to it,a nickel and other clad plus a nice red 1950 wheatie.
A junk earring to plus some other kind of jewelry but all the little round things broke off.
I would expect nothing less because it just loves to find jewelry.
In my very difficult trash and iron infested soil every target was a victory.
All came in solid and got dug because they stayed within my digging rules.

Oh yea, one more thing popped up.
In the backyard of a permission house that backs right up to the park, along an old fence area where the fence is long gone and this is an area I have been hunting continuously with my F70 and every coil I got...a surprise....

Go down

Keep going

A little more

TA DA...

A beautiful Buff, a rare find for me, and my oldest one yet and I know for sure because it has a nice readable date...1917!

Really was a success! That one piece of wire jewelry looks like it could be silver.

Compadre morse code...

That's fantastic! Congrats on the buffalo! Wooo hoo! So true, the Compadre just work soo good. I'm going out in a few min, just got all fired up seeing that stuff you found. Isn't it amazing that the Compadre just has that ability to sound off so distinctly? That's the power of analog sound! The Compadre, no numbers, no meters. The brain is the best computer connected by sound to the Compadre! He he he, Compadre morse code!

Haven't seen any recent posts in The Church lately. Thought I'd give a bump for the Compadre brethren.
BTW - Only been playing with metal detectors for a few weeks now, and two Compadres have already followed me home... both the 5.75" and 8".
^_^

compadre

I HAD a minelab go find...my buddy uses an expensive whites
long story short I couldn't even find dirt with the go find and
My hunting buddy would constantly laugh his butt off at my frustration

I said just wait..I am bringing in a metal assassin
(3 days later)
the compadre showed up at the house,
my son put it together and brought it out to me in the field

my buddy remarked "Looks like a kids toy from K-mart"
I laughed, then LITERALLY walked 3 paces..(boom)=> Harvard silver fork
right over the area he previously walked on by... with nary a beep..

Forward 2 weeks..
I am killing him at the local parks, rivers etc...when it comes to finds
But reality finally set in when we were at a local farm and I pulled a 1820"s Flat Button, and an old brass spoon within 20 minutes
while he ended up with a few square head nails..

He is now a believer and ordered one for himself...
I have a feeling the expensive whites he owns
will prob end up a garage ornament..:laughing:

Remember that the new comers have to bring donuts to church until the next new comer comes to life. Our church is still growing. You got to love this little monster... Best of luck... KEN

Haven't been on this forum very long (sign up that is) Well yesterday i started to read about Church of the Compadre, after looking the first 3 pages and started to skip to the higher pages, I noticed I spent 1hr reading and thinking ---I might need One Of These Machine's, Well, I'm in, I can see the light, I'm trying to trade some coils and not use any cash first. ----------See what happens ---------------GH------------after1------------

how do you rate the small coil compared to the larger one?

In my experience the 7" coil seems to be bigger than the 5.75" but probably works about the same.
On mine it seems the windings are not exactly out near the edges but about a half to three quarters inch inside from what I can tell when I hear beeps over targets.
They both might actually be the same thing, coverage wise, with the modern versions made in a more compact size with a little less waste of material.
Some of the older 7" models did have a different board inside...some swear they are little bit hotter because of that so I am glad I own one.
I have never actually swung a small coil unit ever so I can't tell you if there is actually any difference but from reports from small coil owners if there is one again this would probably be extremely small...maybe unnoticeable without tons of hours using both.

The 8" coil model I tried for a few weeks did seem to have a bit more depth, not a ton but more.
This was factory stock with no tweaks on the sense pot which might even add a little more depth overall if modded.
The ability to get double beeps on targets next to big metal was exactly the same using the 8" coil...amazing as always, absolutely no difference.

What I did notice that was slightly different on the 8" coil was the disc.
A little bit sloppy and not quite as exact as my 7" which I assume would be because of that donut coil.
Not a deal breaker by any means and honestly I might not have even noticed this very small difference if I didn't have so many hours using mine.

I came across several complete not yet eaten away zinc cents with the new one and most disced out at that 3:00 knob area but a few were slightly higher and a few slightly lower...just a hair on both ends.
On mine this target is a 3:00 one every time and I have probably dug several hundreds if not into the thousands.
I never reset that knob on any Tesoro to hit nickels at exactly the 5 cent mark, that coin is just way to iffy, but there are so many more zincs out there and I use that exact 3:00 setting as my benchmark.
Something I just got used to and confident in over the years.

All models are great at what they do, not really any downsides on any of them unless you are looking for major depth and I have my Vaq and F70 for that task.
