Apologies to all the crazy bums out there! In fact, after reviewing the video, and minimal injury incurred by the victim, I doubt this was an insane bum attack at all! ...

I'm thinking the video taker and the attacker were simply your run of the Mill harmless Smelly Hippies, and they thought the old guy was digging up turtle nests or something! So the one guy filmed while the other confronted! Plus, a 71 yr old Man has certainly seen far worse traumatic encounters in his Life than this minor scuffle? He grew up during the 60's, VietNam era, no doubt got in quite a few fist fights as we all did back in those days...

In comparison, 100 people shot over the 4th of July weekend on the streets of Chicago, a wild bunch of Bath Salt Zombies running around in Florida that will actually kill you and gobble you up right there on the the spot like some sort of ambulatory Happy Meal? And this old guy gets pushed down on the sand? Digger Please!

If you CA guys are so concerned, why not start a 'Go Fund Me' site for this poor old guys PTSD counseling?? Write a letter to your CA Governor and get that beach declared a 'Safe Space'? Or something?

Theres no story or damage here!..If this is the worst thing that has happened to a detectorist out afield, we as a group are getting off pretty lightly...The World is a dangerous place, You never know what kind of adventure awaits once you get out of the house...so I can and will joke about it....

I will say this, if one of us is ever attacked by a Miami Bath Salt Zombie, ..Now THAT would be a newsworthy story! "Old Man attacked by insane Cannibal! No remains found except tennis shoes and a Minelab!"

Right? I am thinking this whole deal was a Fake News set up! It is possible The old guy was in cahoots! To scare other Old guys off his beach even! Blamed it on a dirty insane Beach Bum! He wasnt hurt or robbed! Creative but Inexcusable concept!

Honest Dirty insane Bums have it tough enough out there panhandling for money and finding half smoked cigarette butts than to attack an old Man this recklessly without robbing him in the process? To what end? Just to swear at somebody and push them down? Put a minor scuff on their noggin? Big Deal! My Wife does this to me on the Daily, and I dont go off crying to the local media! It makes no sense from an ROI perspective!

Most 71yr old guys I know, especially beachsweeper Detectorists are in tip top shape, tough old birds and experienced street fighters, ornery as hell and not putting up with any kind of foolishness...easily and willingly capable of defending themselves in hand to hand combat against a group of attackers half their age....Finely honed sense of awareness and impossible to sneak up on....Old Mean Guys in shape can be extremely dangerous! They got nothing to lose, and are just itching for the chance to kick the krap out of just one more person for old times sake...They actually go out looking for trouble! I know I do!....

You dont dare cut them off when they are working a grid I can tell you! For sure, you will never be able to disarm them and beat them softly with their own scoop like what happened here?....No...this whole deal stinks to High Heaven!...Fake News! Old guys are damned dangerous and nothing to be trifled with! As you were reading this, 50 beach muggers were clubbed to death by an Old guy with a scoop and quickly buried on the beaches of the World!....

Probably 5 alone in my AO this morning and it aint even 11! Of course, up here we are running Pros, barefoot, serious and mean as hell....not a bunch of sock wearing Minelabber pacifists! Stay out of West Michigan if you know whats good for you!!

I had never heard of bath salt zombies - learned something new.
I'm thinking this outcome was better than if the MD guy had had a gun or bowie knife and used it - and there was a photo too. We'd all then be suspected as having knives/guns and the public attitude would go negative towards us. I remember when I was a young kid at the beach, metal detector guys were looked down upon, families were scared of them, women would grab their kids arm to keep them from the scary md man. Today kids love metal detectors and want to know more about them, parents point me out and say "look he's searching for treasure". Tourists who don't even know what I'm doing come and ask. I know some of you prefer to be left alone but I enjoy the conversation as part of my day.

This is a real good illustration of why I carry some specialized equipment all the time, no matter where I go.

There's a lot reason's I always carry and this is one of them!

X2... I don't know what the carry laws are in that part of the states, probably would have been a whole different story had the ole man been totin'.

The non-sympathetic comments on here (Mud) really give me pause. You got issues!
Granted we'll never know the full story but this guy simply got a beat down. Imagine if he received the sharp end of the scoop to the face/neck/eye? Thankfully he got off with a few scratches and a bruised ego.

We have a growing problem with homelessness & drug use. The #'s have exploded and the majority live close to large population/tourists areas where they can get a handout or where garbage cans are full of half eaten meals. I suspect this problem is just going to get worse. Having your eyes down and headphones on cuts down on your ability to rely on two primary senses to protect yourself. Add the dead of night and #'s with bad intentions and your odds could be much worse.

My point...be aware of your surroundings. I'm sure no one here wants to be "that guy" on the evening news.

As a detector of many of those areas mentioned I've given up dark time detecting and stick to sun-up to sundown times. All of the above are true. Keep your head up while swinging that coil and be aware of your surroundings. nuff said

I can't understand some of these comnents. Stock markets are at record highs almost weekly. Unemployment rate is near record low. Housing prices are going through the roof and gold is in a 6 year bear market. Makes sense right ?

Hmmmm, from looking at the pictures the attack looks like it happened during the day. I don't think crazy has a time schedule. 75% of my hunts are during dark hours and I have never had a problem, But If someone ever did approach me, this is what I would say in my darkest voice....

Oh, you think darkness is your ally. But you merely adopted the dark; I was born in it, molded by it. I didn't see the light until I was already a man, by then it was nothing to me but BLINDING! The shadows betray you, because they belong to me!
