Breaking Beach News !

I want to be thoughtful, considerate, and respectful in my response here. Unless herd immunity is reached and the CoronaVirus has no way to spread, we will ALL GET THIS VIRUS. There is no cure, there will be no successful vaccine. All the "social distancing" in the world does nothing but to drag out the effects of the lockdown and prevent immunity. Think of measles, rubella, smallpox, tetanus, rabies etc. So many Americans have been vaccinated that these formerly killer diseases are a non issue, as we have herd immunity.

To give a bit of history, I did worry when the news first came out of Wuhan. I agreed with the social distancing and was in favor of the 15 day business shutdown so as to "flatten the curve" of infections so that our hospitals would not be overwhelmed. We were told up to 2 MILLION Americans would die from this. But as the facts changed, our nation's policy did not. The goal posts were moved from "flattening the curve" to "no one gets the virus." The death projections went from 2 Million to 1 Million to 200,000 to 100,000 to now about 65,000. The shutdown for "no one gets the virus" has gone from 15 days, to 30 days, to 60 days, now to MONTHS.

Again, you are more likely to die in a car crash this year than die from the CoronaVirus, excluding the very elderly and the medically compromised. Those folks should be protected, and immunity built up in the general populace so that those at risk will be completely safe. The media has created a true State of Fear in our population.

Your statements are pretty accurate here. I don't think everyone HAS to get it. But that's all easy to say from the beautiful state of Montana , where it hasn't been a major problem YET. Maybe there should be a fence or wall constructed around your pristine state. That way no one gets in , or out ! Everyone remains safe in your utopia...

But keep detecting , we like seeing your finds !

Thanks KOB! Hopefully I will do that and post some good finds! Have not had much to report lately, the last couple of trips netted 4 Silver Rosies and 27 wheat pennies. Nothing really neat or unusual, just a ton of clad quarters, some wheats and a bit of the shiny.

And I agree, I hope not everyone HAS to get it. If enough healthy people develop immunity then we will not all get it. And with summer coming on, with heat and sunshine (UV light), those conditions tend to defeat virus type colds too!

Sufficating alone in a hospital is not the way i had it planned. Montana sounds lovely. I hope to see it one day.

Brazil decided not to shut down their country... lets take a look how that is working out...

https://www.foxnews.com/world/coronavirus-brazil-mass-graves-worst-hit

Interesting post! I wonder about the age of the victims, the sanitation and cleanliness of that area, and the co-morbidities of the people who have died. What percent of healthy Brazilians have died... the article does not say. This virus IS more lethal to folks in the "at risk" category than the regular flu.

Italy was another example of the virus running wild! The media trumpeted the huge daily death counts. Again, these were people in the high risk groups that were dying. Elderly, Overweight, Diabetes, high blood pressure, lung issues etc etc in Northern Italy. That rate of death has greatly tapered off there.

Hiding in our homes, under our desks, and being Afraid of Other People will not bring an end to this situation.

Well without getting political our President today......yes today said he is hopeful of a vaccine by the end of the year. Take it for what it is worth. Believe him or not. The herd mentallity is only a part of it. Not overwhelming the emergency helathcare system all at once is a major part of my governor's plan. I have seen an estimate where 60 to 70 percent of the population in the US will eventually get the virus. I actually believe that. Being a high risk individual in a red zone of my state is not comforting. And i alone will decide when and where to risk my health. It won't be for a metal detecting trip to a beach or a haircut. There are many cofusing myths and facts about this pandemic. My personal opinion is that a lack of leadership contributes to that. Hey I got political after all. But one thing is for sure. Sufficating alone in a hospital is not the way i had it planned.

Good post goodmore! Would love to have you visit Montana anytime! "Hopeful of a Vaccine" is just that. I note that the Governor of California said recently that he will keep the restrictions in place UNTIL THERE IS A VACCINE. Good luck with that.

I am glad you are taking responsibility for your own risk levels. I have no fear of this virus, heck, I may have already had it as I did have a bit of fever, chills, and sniffles back in March. I am in kind of an "at risk" group due to my age and some minor lung issues back in January.

On the other hand, I do totally respect the wishes of others and am always considerate when interacting with others while out and about, even when I think the precautions are way over the top. While detecting, I keep my distance from others, when I door knock, I step back 10' from the door and request permission to detect the front yard from there, same with letting the homeowner know I will be out on the curb strip.

I don't hide at home... my business is considered essential... I never knew landscaping was such... I do wear a mask while working as does every other landscaper I have seen... yeah its hot wearing it but for me its essential as I also take care of a 93 YO... mitigation will help slow it down and doing what our governor suggests... I'm afraid sunlight and heat will not stop this virus from spreading..

My wife is originally from Colombia and they down there are surprised at this countries response to the virus... their mitigation and rules are a lot more harsh than ours are...

Frankly, I'm amazed at what I am reading in this thread.

1. There will be NO VACCINE for this. In the history of medicine there has never been a successful vaccine for a CoronaVirus. MERS and SARS, both Respiratory Corona Viruses, have NO vaccine. The regular flu virus, yes, each year there is a flu shot available based on what the scientists guess will be the upcoming strain. So for those of you waiting on some sort of cure, it is NOT going to happen.

2. If you back out the deaths from co-morbidities such as diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, and COPD type issues, age and environment (nursing homes and hospitals) you are LESS LIKELY to die from the CoronaVirus than to be killed in a car crash this year. Yes, some younger people (thankfully no children) are killed by this virus, but that is true of the regular flu every year, and definitely true in car accidents. Should we prohibit driving because of the deaths that come about? My goodness... almost 3 MILLION AMERICANS die each year... 650,000 from heart disease, 600,000 from cancer. Heck, medical mistakes and infections AT HOSPITALS account for well over 100,000 deaths each year.

3. Over 50% of those who get covid-19 have NO symptoms, in other words, it has NO EFFECT on their health. For the vast majority of the rest of us, it may give the sniffles, a fever or cough, but we recover. What we need to do is protect the "at risk" groups of Americans, and really control who comes into contact with that group, while freeing up the rest of us to return to normal life. We are creating a State of Fear in this country where even a simple handshake is going to be looked at with disgust. Heaven forbid giving a friend a hug in public!

4. Metal detecting, getting out and enjoying the beautiful parks, hunting curb strips and yards is a perfect hobby, even if you are afraid of the virus. In the current social climate, people WILL AVOID YOU! :yes:The virus does NOT like sunshine, UV light kills it rapidly.

5. Without herd immunity, the CoronaVirus WILL BE BACK in the fall, and perhaps for some years to come. Do you want to see small business destroyed, our city, county and state government tax base destroyed by unemployment and bankruptcies (and the pensions and benefits generated therein). Do you want fear created simply by being around another person to be the prevailing social custom?

I can't help but think of a Ben Franklin saying... "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."

A couple of counterpoints. We abandoned the on-going research on a SARS vaccine, when the SARS epidemic went away. There was, in effect, no financial incentives for the companies involved, to continue spending money to develop a vaccine that no one was going to need.

Herd immunity: Scientists at this time do not know if you can/can't get covid-19 more than once. If it turns out that you can get it more than once, the concept of herd immunity goes out the window.

This virus can be beat! Look at South Korea. They went from a peak of 813 daily new cases on February 29, to 4 daily new cases on April 30. Their cumulative total of covid-19 cases is 10,793.

Unfortunately, our government keeps downplaying the importance of really massive covid-19 testing and contact tracing. It is not the total number of tests that is important, it is test per capita and we are way behind South Korea on this.

I understand Cfmct! Was not speaking to you directly about hiding, but a ton of Americans are doing just that.

As for summer, the article says "might survive high temps" but definitely not UV exposure. The local RML Level 4 Haz Lab here in town (National Institute of Health and one of only a few in the USA) uses UV to kill viruses as a preventative in their work areas.

True, no financial incentive, but what about having a real vaccine ready in case SARS flares up again. Perhaps because no successful vaccine can be produced.

Herd immunity: Scientists at this time do not know if you can/can't get covid-19 more than once. If it turns out that you can get it more than once, the concept of herd immunity goes out the window.

True, but having it a second time should be much less lethal as some protection will be inherent.

Covid testing is useless unless you can really CONTROL the activities of a person once tested. I can be tested "free and clear" in the morning, and go to the grocery store and be exposed once again. How would that testing be enforced? A daily test to be allowed out of my own home? And contact tracing... are you saying I need to have some sort of (pardon the words) "electronic ankle bracelet" that lets our benevolent government and health authorities know where I am and who I choose to see or visit or be at any time? For every citizen in America? And all of this for a virus that is statistically (outside of the high risk group) less dangerous than driving a car?

No, the point of testing is to detect those that are infected and put them in isolation. And yes, testing would have to be compulsory, in some kind of organized manner, not just test those with symptoms, or those that are curious, but to also get the 30% or more asymptomatic carriers.

No contact tracing is when you identify an infected person, to try and develop a history of where they've been to and who they mingled with over the past couple of weeks and then get those people tested and places fumigated.

What annoys me is that they are doing a good job of limiting the number of people who can be in my local Walmart, but they can't do that at the beach? I stood in line for 15 minutes last week waiting to be allowed to enter Walmart. They were doing a great job of controlling the crowd and no one was angry about waiting a few minutes to go inside.

Why not do this at the entrance of every beach? Figure out what a reasonable number of people would be for that specific beach and then turn people away when that number is reached. At least a few hundred people could enjoy a day at the beach, instead of no one being allowed on the beach. Just my take on the current situation.

costs are incurred by Walmart.. manning gates at a beach would have to be paid for with freshly printed dollars

That's hilarious ! I wonder how well that would go over at Huntington Beach. Where you will get 75-100k in 1 day. With I don't know how many entry points. And take their temperature as they enter the beach. Oh wait...nevermind.. the virus will die off in the hot sun , uv rays when they funnel off the beach

Then don't go to the beach.

Doesn't the Haz lab use UVC rays though, not UVA or UVB? UVC most of us will never be exposed to (which is a GOOD thing. You'd get sunburned by a few seconds exposure). UVA and UVB I don't believe will impact the virus.

I would think twice before going into a walmart... I haven't been since this issue started...
