Best weekend of detecting EVER! 1861 Double Eagle and lots of BIG silver!

congratulations on a super spot and finds. Please go over this spot numerous times you will still find good stuff. man that is a dream to find that much good coins. how heavy is the gold coin? CB

A double eagle that year should weigh in at 33.4 grams...Wow!

And i was wrong on an earlier post. If the calculations are correct at 90% gold, close to 22kt, melt value is about $1680...Holy $@#!

That's what my book says.....

Are ya sure those are $20 gold prices and not $10? According to this site, fair market value for an 1861 G4 is $2040 and a VF-20 says $2330.

Am I missing something or is it worth less than what I was thinking?[/QUOTE]

I'm using the Blue Book for value. If I understand correctly it's what you could expect a dealer or collector to give you. Red Book is what you could expect to spend to buy one ?
Still a wad of bills either way ! I hope to see it after a grading.

This settles it, I am going with the Spectra V3i when I upgrade. Have you thought of going back with a depth amplifier of some type. If the Double was at 11", it's conceivable that there could be more just a little out of the V3i depth range.

Congrats on the great find of a lifetime..

Somewhere there should be a push pile where he pushed it off to one side..
Maybe he tried to spread it back out level, but there should be an area where there is a pile of dirt where he burned off the brush..look for some area that looks like a pile or perhaps it may only look like a small terrace.. If you find it I expect you'll find more coins..
Good luck..

wow

Yup if it was me I'd be firing up the old tractor and taking off about 6 inches of top soil and hitting that spot again. After scanning that top soil of course. There had to be something buried there.

Thanks to everyone for all the comments and congrats.

that's freakin amazing! wonder what was in that area prior? have you tried to research what was on this land before the house was built? congrats man!

I'm not sure what was there before, but I do plan to take a trip to the local library soon and see if I can find something. And thanks!

Thats more along the lines of what I was thinking. Not like it matters though, 'cause I'm not selling it anyway.

Thats true.. I'm going back this weekend with the Spectra tuned as hot as I can get it.. Slow recovery speed, max Rx gain that the ground will allow, etc. Once I'm confident that I've dug every signal, I'll probably do what some of the other guys suggested.. skim off another 5 to 6 inches of dirt and detect it again.

Congrats on the great find of a lifetime..

There is indeed a pile around the edges. I've actually already started searching it and haven't found anything yet, but I'm thinking if I could spread it out a little I may find something there.

Thanks again guys.

Ohhhhh...I did forget to mention one thing in my original post as I was still staring in amazement...

Can you just imagine the stories that Double Eagle could tell.. If it were me I would never be able to sale it..
That's my problem, I can't part with the things I find..
It's hard for me to even imagine finding something like that.. The best Coin I've ever seen posted..Well, one thing about it.. You have fired everyone up to get out there and keep looking.. Keep pounding that ground from all directions, dig it all.. HH, for a long time..Hope you find it's sister..

absolutely frigging unbelievabley insanely awesome! wow wow wow wow wow!!! nothing i can say could add to anything else that's already been said. i am in total awe of those coins and how they were found. its what we all hope for when we take to the field. big congrats on the best find of the year on this forum, and more than likely any other one also!

Holy smokes man. That is freakin awesome. I would be happy with just some silver let alone that gold double eagle. Heck, I'll be happy with some clad. Nice finds!!

Best MD story EVER!

Wow. After reading this two or three times I feel as though I was there with you. This is exactly why I detect. Backstory and all. As we all grab our detectors and head out into the field, I'd like to accentuate some important points of your story. Play your hunch. The likelihood of your pap finding an 80+ year old silver dollar on the suface is virtually impossible. Odds were very good that it had company. You found nothing in 3 HOURS and still persevered. How many times would we quit after an hour or two of zilch? But 3?! Well played. Lastly, the recallings of our seniors are an invaluable resource. I work with the public and whenever I'm conversing with a senior I always ask about possible locations for a hunt. They love the chance to recount and I'm always willing to listen. Hunches, patience and seeking tips from those who were there. Awesome. Hope you find more gold. The Bobcat idea is brilliant. Thanks for the thrills.

That's got to be the best find I have ever seen on any post. Congratulations! The gold is incredible, but the big silver is rediculously cool!

WOW!! Amazing hunt, probably the single best dirt hunt for old coins I have ever seen posted! The double eagle is just outstanding!

I would be back there every chance. Maybe you should take your grandma out for a nice dinner or Sunday brunch! WTG Grandma!

The lesson here is you just never know until you try, whether its a new home or old home! Congrats to you again!
