Wouldn't completely discount it, hackers seem to thrive on a challenge, big or small. It's not really the cause, or a collective resource, it's more of a race to see who can do it first. We've had Anonymous attack a few sites here in Florida, most recent was the Mayor of Orlando, over a ban on feeding the homeless, at a local park. Another anarchy group, Food Not Bombs, chose one of the finer parks, to do a weekly meal for the homeless. Just one meal a week, and mostly to distribute literature, ask for donations. Little disruptive, left a mess every week, strange homeless men hanging out, scaring children, stuff going on in the shrubbery and bushes.
The other one last year, was a sheriff's department website, it was over something petty, don't remember the details, something to do with Occupy Orlando.
The cause isn't of any importance, just getting some air time and notoriety. More about showing off their skills. Pulling down a Metal-Detecting website, probably wouldn't make the evening news, but there are several internet channels, which sort of keep 'score'...
