Anyone Geocaching?

I've been geocaching for a little over a year now. I've found 258 and hidden 8. My geocaching name is the same as here. I was just about to post this topic when I decided to search it found this one. Anyone thinking about trying it, I highly recommend it.

Hi all! Glad to see this thread is still going.

Our latest cache I found was located totally by accident! We bought a Tesoro Cibola and took it to a beach to try it out. In my course of hunting ran across a cache in a army ammo can. It was pretty well hid, but not for a detector!

It was full of toys, seeing as it was a beach cache, and hid at the edge of the dunes. I signed the book and explained how I found it by metal detecting. TNLN

I'm still making plans to get out and do some more but life keeps getting in the way! Did go fishing this weekend though. Cladius and three dogs ( also my cache handle)

I haven't been on in a little while. That's one way to find a cache Carol K! Don't forget to log that one online, I'd get a kick out of a log like that.

I haven't been detecting as much lately, hope to get out some more. Located a few more good spots again thanks to caching just haven't gotten back to them yet.

I also released my first 3 travel bugs since I last posted here, I just keep getting deeper and deeper into this hobby lol

Hello all... I myself just started getting into Geocaching, it's great fun and gets me out there walking around rather than sitting in my ez-chair. I bought a Garmin Etrex Legend CX and I love it. I can see how adding the topo maps would help with detecting. One thought I had was that if I find a spot that has some hits, it might be great to mark a waypoint there and go back from time to time and see if anything else pops up.

I have found 11 geocaches to-date and I am in the process of creating a hard cache myself to plant. I figure it will be a 5/3 or so.

The two sports I wanted to try this year was geocaching and detecting. Can't wait to scrape together the money I need for my detector and get out there.

If you have not tried geocaching, I highly recommend it. It's another way to get some exercise and to get out there! Geocaching for me is all about seeing new places, walking and trying to follow a "map" the cache itself is not really what I am after, that is why I want to start detecting! :) Seriously, try going geocaching with a friend, chances are you'll get hooked. And if you do I can't recommend the Garmin Etrex Legend CX enough. Great little unit. If you get it invest in he street maps ... it makes the unit shine!

I had heard about geocaching, but this thread inspired me to get started!

I went to geocaching.com, and signed up. Lots of info to read there.

I really like the idea of TRAVELBUGS or GEOCOINS. You register them online (like a serial number). They get picked up in one location, and (hopefully) taken to another. You get to read about its travels and the people who find them :)

When I hide my first cache, I think I'll combine metaldetecting and geocaching. I'll probably bury the can/box with a geocoin in it, so that only people with detectors can find it, and leave instructions for the next person to do the same.

Woo hoo! I'm excited! GOGOGEOCACHING!

Geocaching is a blast. I have been doing it for sometime but keep in mind you won't have your cache approved if you bury it (it's against the rules :().

Diverman is quite correct, part of the geocaching rules state that we need to be "environment friendly" I always thought that if you own the piece of land you should be able to berry the cache if you wish, of course that would make it REALLY hard for people to find and they might start digging holes in all kinds of places. I guess the thinking is that if someone has the wrong coordinates they might dig up someones lawn or something. Having been geocaching for about 2 months now I can say that I have been in the wrong places several times, once about 1/2 mile in the middle of the woods. Guess this is one reason for the "no digging" rule

This seem's to be a very interesting subject. I have been reading everyone's post and it sparked a new interest.

I joined Geocache as username Turkey Creek. Not beleiving that anyone in my area would do such a thing, I typed in my zipcode and man was there caches everywhere. This is going to be a fun hobby. Now all I have to do is buy a GPS since some item's may be difficult to find. I will be traveling to NC this week and I may look for a Travel Bug.

Tsmola, do you leave your mark or signature in the Cache?

Generally speaking people will sign the log book saying they were there, I use my Geocaching Screen name: Silverstring when I sign in. As for the cache itself many people take something and leave something. Usualy the items have a value of $1 or so... some a little more some a little less. If you take a travelbug or a coin it does not count as "taking something from the cache" so you do not have to leave anything.

If you are in the market for a GPS unit, give STRONG consideration to the Garmin Etrex Legend CX. $250 or so. After weeks of research this is the one I decided on. It has the best options for the money. If you wish to read my review on this unit just go to Amazon.com and type in Garmin Etrex Legend CX ... scroll down and under "Kevin L" you will see my review. Great unit. It even has ageocaching feature built into it. I have spoken to many people and read lots of reviews, in general people seem to favor the Garmin over the other brands.

I've had my Garmin about 30 days and I love it. If you get the City Navigator software ($100ish) the unit becomes VERY accurate with car navigation and even will allow you to choose to get to a cache via the Road or off Road. My buddy has the Garmin Legend and he likes it quiet a bit but the lack of expandable memory does not allow him much room to load topo maps or street maps. The Legend is a nice unit for around $100 but I wanted the color and the memory expandability so I went for the Legend CX ... well worth the extra $150 ... if you have any questionson this GPS or others I'd be pleased to offer my 2 cents.

I never thought about these two together, but it makes sense. I've been caching for 5 years and I'm just now researching metal detecting. I publish a magazine on geocaching that you can read at www.todayscacher.com

I'm excited about metal detecting! I just need to find the right unit now.

El Diablo

my evil cache is a multi step cache, with the first hidden 25 feet up a rock wall in the middle of nowhere and the second (and final) cache at the base of the wall right out in the open!, only one person has found both so far, and it took him 12 hours.

FYI it's caches like your's that drive people nuts! Keep up the good work it's a blast! I've met some nice people and reunited with old freinds. Cladius.

My better half got me interested in geocaching
recently....ever since, I've been trying to get him to
try MDing...I just KNEW there was a way to combine
the two!! I loved the pic of the cache in the log...
a true EVIL micro-cache!!

Welcome BashfulNga glad you're here! I just got going caching this summer and have 28 finds. found two of the new jeeps in the last week. I moved one along and will send the second one on it's way after 9/1 so I can enter it in the contest. for those of you who don't cache there is a contest jeep puts on where you can win prizes including a new jeep by finding hidden jeep matchbox toys. I have two already this month. this is a lot of fun and I'm find good mding spots. Cladius.

I found my first one today! I don't even have a GPS. It was an easy one with such good clues that I drove right to it. It was under some metal stairs at a mall in a magnetic box. I signed the log, put it back, and left. It was soo cool. I can't wait to get more into this.

Hi all, well we've been doing a lot of traveling this summer, and gee, all we could think about was all the geocaches that was hid around us.

We didn't get to hunt, but it was always on our mind. What does this mean? That we're hooked on it? Or just enjoy the hunt?
Anyway, now that it's Fall our schedule has slowed a bit, and we'll be out for a search soon.

Thanks for all the input into this thread, I do think that metal detecting and geocaching go hand in hand.

I did as you suggested Tsmola, I posted the accidental cache find as found. It took me awhile to find it, but success! They will all know we found it by metal detecting. ;)

I'm still getting out once in a while and yes it is addicting and a lot of fun. I have like 46 finds now and have found four green jeeps. Cladius.

me and my daughter went and found one a couple weeks ago, we didnt use a GPS, alot of the ones they have around here are fairly wasy to find if you know the area so GPS isnt needed
it was kind of fun, we're planning on going to go find a few more...

I let her sign her name and exchange something, she thought it was pretty cool...

Come on everybody! If it's possible, next time you find a cache, take a picture!

It's fun seeing and hearing what you found, had to go through to find it, especially if it's a micro.
