Advice to all the newbies...let's talk about zinc and gold!

MUST dig the penny/zinc signals. Tons of good stuff there plus the pennies do add up. I've never found anything good in the foil range though. On my ace in trashy areas I have to notch out anything under nickel. Or I literally can't hunt period. If it's a non trashy area I dig it all.

I found and dug all these rings except for the top 2 on the left.
I dig all signals from just below foil on up with my Vaq, (I swear that disc knob has been going lower lately, though), foil and up with my F2, and all signals from the iron range on up with my Compadre.
I don't care how trashy my sites are...well, I do care, but I dig all that trash, anyway.
I just tell myself I could use the exercise...and now I own several gold rings that I did not own before.

This is from one hunt in an unusually trashy park with my Vaq and, call me crazy, a 10X12 DD coil....

Signals.

If it pulls my chain, will dig it!

Even with modern technology, soil conductivity and aged ears, DIG IT!

One never knows!

Digger, look at what I found today! It came in around 75-76 on my AT Pro...a 20 cent Euro! ANd I think the 2P Irish coin came in around 80-81. The photo shows it and some other stuff I found today in a park (in upstate NY!)!

I dig all signals on the etrac between 25 and 35 on the conductive. Found a 14 kt gold ring today that rang up 34. zincolns ring up 37 or so. A highly corroded zincoln will ring up 34 or 35. I also dig 11-14 and 43 -49. I avoid the rest of the scale because i don't care for all the trash I would have to dig in the other ranges.

Here's one for you East Coast boys...You get a zinc signal 6" down at an old site, you best dig it. This was a solid 62 on the vdi, zincolns read the same. Relic hunter's gold, this find...

care to give us a little history lesson on that beautiful ?civil war button? ?

No, it's a US artillery button from the War of 1812. This style button was in use from 1809-1821. There are several slightly different versions it seems...I have yet to find a exact match anywhere, so it's probably pretty rare.

whites PI

Well,Back home to Ca,from spending 9 days on Oahu,,best treasure was spending time with my family..no luck on the West side area,2 pennies,1 nickel, lots of bottle caps:wow: then drove to North Shore, lots of screws, nails, bottle caps, found a broken silver necklace, over on Waimea found some coins, water was too choppy.:no:Went to Waikiki, found a gold toe ring @ least I hope its real.I had some loud signals kept on digging & got louder, felt like I was going nowhere, then it was a metal pipe..I really try to listen to the sounds of metal ,coins,& gold it all sounds same to me..Feeling discouraged,I must be doing something wrong:no:The next day went down to Hilton around 4:30 am again same loud signals, kept digging nothing showed up so I gave up thinking it was a metal pipe again, sometimes I'm digging about 2 feet & it sounds loud ,then I give up again b/c I think its just another pipe, can someone give me some pointers on using my whites surf PI,going to bed will return in the morning to read on some infer from all of you,Love & Aloha:grin:

One big thing I have learned is that some of the most successful hunters also are the ones that dig some of the most trash, too.

I'm glad that you came to Kansas to get rid of all of the trash. There's plenty of it here. With everything that you've found, I can't believe that you haven't found an older coin. You should be able to now.

How True!! I'm digging way more stuff going steady as you go method.

Anything:?: could be down there hanging in the dirt.

I've seen others running past me with $$ detectors that missed the boat thinking their Gold was Just up yonder a bit further.

I mentally grid the area I'm in.

Thanks for the post!!

Actually, I think it is important for newbys to understand how gold rings will look. I found this out when I was tested my new detector with my wedding band. However, I don't agree with digging every target in every given situation. If you are out in a corn field, and there are shards of pottery around, and you are getting maybe one target every 100 sq ft, by all means dig it...even if it is iron. However, if you are in the local park or on the side of the road, you might as well start dumping shovels of dirt in a screed and leave your detector in the truck.

READ THE SITE....every situation will give you a feel for how you will prefer to handle it, once you have gained the experience....you will know when to invest your effort to yield optimal results.

Most often I am the Deep Silver only digger, but if I can't find any "no brainer" targets, I start descriminating less. After all... I am there to dig, not to swing.

As a relative newbie I seemed to have beginners luck but have been frustrated lately by trash and little treasure. I'm still having fun though and will persevere but I think I need to hit those tot lots more for the gratification of clad.

I'm getting frustrated with lack of finding any old coins. Well other than I found a Barber quarter in the waiting room at doctor's office and a wheat penny laying on top of mulch at the utility company's office near front door. I figure those don't count though. I went to a park where a guy told me they dug silver and every time it rung up in that range it was a deep Budweiser can or piece of chain link fence. I'm actually surprised at even the lack of finding any farming or pioneer artifacts while detecting. I used to live about 50 miles away in a similar town but would find pioneer stuff laying on the ground. I'm surprised I am not digging much of anything here other than a small amount of clad, cheap jewelry and tons of bottle caps, pull tabs and those blasted chain link fence pieces. I even tried yesterday digging all metals instead of discriminating out iron thinking maybe I would find something. But oddly I could not locate any of the iron targets.
