Advice to all the newbies...let's talk about zinc and gold!

:grin:I enjoy reading all the more experienced detectors posts. It gives me hints and ideas as to better my own finds. I am not in the older part of the country like in the east and north or south, where the history is much richer and older then here.
But, I still believe there are great finds out here for me, I just have to keep hunting and researching the local history. Thanks to Digger and all the others who are willing to share their knowledge with us new guys!

HH!

Where I live we are severely handicapped as far as depth because of our devil soil.
A few pockets of good soil here and there, but that is rare.

I decided when I started and realized that it is going to be difficult to get down deep enough to get those old coins like others in this country that are blessed with good soil, that I would hunt clad, jewelry...anything and everything.

I have done very well, had a lot of fun, found some great stuff, lots of clad, a few relics, pins and medals and knick knacks of all kinds, and even a few silver coins.
The several silver and gold rings I have found made it even better.

Ya gotta do what ya gotta do.

Thanks Digger for the encouragment! I have been MD'ing since March and have dug up almost 1000 pennies and no gold. Lately I have been so discouraged not finding anything I have stopped digging penny signals. On my AT Pro those things can ring up anywhere from 75 to 82. Dimes are also 82 so sometihngs I dig a penny thinking it is a dime. But I'll take your word for it and resume digging penny signals. After 1000 tries I got to hit sometihng good, right???

P.S. You have over 4000 posts! Looks like you are on line all the time, how in the world do you have time to MD?? ;)

I always dig a good solid zinc signal. Pennies add up! Except when they are corroded to pieces. My problem is going to a trashy area where I know there is a chance of jewelry and having to discriminate out foil and tab due to the fact that everyone throws their beer and coke tabs everywhere. But I still get the pennies!

Just have a big mouth...and I get bored at work.

Funny that this thread came up now. Just this week I dug a 12-32 signal on my e trac and came up with a mens HS grad ring at about 5 inches. It was a pretty classic zlincoln type signal. 19 grams of 10K.

I dig it all even when I know it is trash.

I have read literally thousands of posts on different forums, advice columns, everything and anything to get better and learn all I can.

One big thing I have learned is that some of the most successful hunters also are the ones that dig some of the most trash, too.

Sure you can cut some of the trash out with information you can get from high end machines, or by just getting good with whatever machine you are swinging, but the bottom line is you just never know 100% till you dig it.

If it is a solid tone I dig it, and for the last few months I have been digging some of those iffy targets too.
Guess what?
Some of those iffy signals were good targets trying to fool me...but they didn't...I captured them too.

DIG IT ALL..then you will be sure.

Dig all the zinc signals too, or just leave them for me because I will be happy to clean up your areas of all these pesky zincolns if you give me a chance.
I don't own quite enough gold to satisfy me just yet!

dug 4000 pennys last year also got some gold

I've found some really cool tokens that came up as zinc. Class rings come up there. Half dimes come up in that range. Indian heads...Small silver rings...Civil war bullets. Heck, even worn out wheaties come in as zinc sometimes. Way too many good things come in at zinc. I dig them very often.
