I've had my Ace 250 for about 2 months now and when I was out detecting the other day it seemed to start acting kind of weird. Like it would pick something up then I would go over the same spot again and it wouldn't pick it up or almost like the metal moved in the ground to a different spot. Also, If I pointed it in the air on pinpoint mode it would start buzzing but there were no electrical lines or anything. I was in a very remote area. I tried turning it off and back on took the batteries out and it still did the same thing. Any ideas?

Highly mineralyzed soil perhaps ? :?:

That's kinda what I was thinking. But why does the detector go off in pinpoint mode when pointed at the sky. Also, I found some rocks that set of the detector whats up with that?

The coil is an radio antenna and "broadcasts" up as well as down (into the ground) and perhaps you were near some Magnitite ore?

These are the so called "hot rocks",just like coal, gets the detector
triggered :D

EMI as in Electrical magnetic interference? No I was on 30 acres in the middle of nowhere with no power lines or cell phone towers in sight.

Did this when I got mine 10 years ago. After nearly getting rid of it, I read where you should run the first 6" of coil wire straight up the shaft from the coil. I did and taped it there and continued wrapping normally the rest of the way. Then I messed up and wrapped it too tight so that when I swung the detector it pulled on the coil connector. After correcting that,it worked great and still does.
FWIW, a few other remedies I have read are: (1). Metal between coil and coil cover; (2). Batteries loose- weak spring, etc. I roll them with my flat hand after installing. (3). Do factory reset (4). In some areas, factory sensitivity is too high-I hardly use mine above 4 bars. (5). Coil damaged.
Other than that, you probably encountered a UFO.

+1
I couldn't have said it better :aok:

That's exactly what I did. I actually even put a couple layers of electrical tape around the coil wire and ran it strait up about 8" and zip tied it the rest of the way. I'm gonna be heading home tonight and I will give it a shot. Also, is there a way to tell if the soil has lots of minerals or small particles that would set the detector off?

If you don't get a repeatable beep from the ground its just nothing, carry on to the next target.
Ace series detectors can false even when bumped, nature of the yellow beast.

Could be a small deep object. I've had issues with my pp on the 250. But hey it gets the job done at least.

I've been very happy with it. Maybe because I don't know any different but it definitely beeps for metal. I think I just need to get a little more famaliar with it.

Go to all metal mode and if they're small iron objects you' ll hear the iron tone-but minerals won't sound off with the exception of hot rocks. A lot of people don't know this, but a magnet will give multiple little signals and be hard as the dickens to pinpoint. If you have a sizeable magnet, you can verify this for yourself- and it does it for all detectors. So magnetic ore or anything magnetic can do this. A few weeks ago I found what looked like large black marbles and when I picked one up, they all stuck together- probably magnets from a computer.

Thank you for the information that might save me a bit of time!

I almost always keep my ACE250 at 4 bars sensitivity.
In exceptional cases , if the ground allows it, higher than 4 bars sensitivity.

My 250 as a UFO detector? Allright! Maybe that's why it reacts when I get near ... (strike that).

Yeah- before Mr. Bill passed away he recommended that after much testing. I did my own test and finally hit a quarter at 6 bars sensitivity with pretty strong audio-although jumpy. I dropped it to 4 bars with only a slight change in audio strength but smoother signal! There seems to be a point-depending on the mineralization- where target signal vs. minerals is best and 4 bars is sorta a middle starting point.
