$1 Coin... Who uses them?

I'm gonna have to say paper money. I couldn't see going into my near by casino and plopping $200 in coins on the hold em table...

I would hope you would go in with paper money larger than $1 bills... and even if you do or dont and go to a table, don't they generally give you chips which in a sense are a coin? :D

the 1 and 2 dollar coins are great here in Canada i founsd a pocket spill of 4 coins thats 8 buck out of one hole.

our 2 $ coin is nickle on the out side and brass on the inside so its like a coin in a coin when you find them in the salt water the brass is all green and corroded but the nickle out side is clean.

I like the idea of finding them, but hate the idea of losing them. Myself, I would rather carry around paper money than a pocket full of change. I lost enough change in my car seat. Now that it was brought up, they do look like Chuck E Cheese tokens to me too! The first time I saw one, I wasn't sure it was legal currency.

I pick them up at the credit union or bank every week and spend 5 to 10 per week. I found two with my Fisher within the last week. As a treasure hunter I'm all for eliminating the paper one dollar bills.

KT likes the idea of finding them also, but figures this will never catch on in the USA. People are into convenience in the USA and they are not convenient to carry. Susan B. Anthony coins were a flop and these new Presidential dollar coins are also.

The main problem other than lack of convenience is the vending machine business. All those dollar bill changers would have to be removed and dollar coin changers reinstalled. Even at 30 buck cost per machine, you are talking a shot of 0ver 500 million bucks in the wallet of the vending machine business. Their lobbyists would not stand for it. And there are a lot more of them than there are folks lobbying for MD rights these days!

I like the idea of others carrying and dropping them. But personally I don't like counting out cash and coins to purchase things because the cashiers are always in a big hurry and growl at cash users, plus I don't like having to carry stuff around especially coins which are heavy. The post office stamp machine used to give back Susan B Anthonys and then changed over to Sacajaweas so that is where I got a lot of mine as change. Plus found some in coin slot. :D

money money

We use the regularly here in Canada and the reason the government eliminated the 1 dollar and 2 dollar bills is............they wear out quick and it costs a lot to keep reprinting them. Coins however stick around for decades. On the surface, it's a great way to cut government spending.

The problem is.........the money they saved just went into their growing government pensions, wages and general overspending so in reality the tax payers were spared NO costs at all and now we have to walk around with heavier pockets.

Canada is now switching remaining bills to the polymer style. Easy to carry like paper but much longer shelf life. They're hard to rip, waterproof and way tougher. It will also save a lot of money in the long run after retooling but of course, those savings are never really savings so in the end it doesn't matter. lol.

In either case.........detectorists will increase their detecting and eye finds with the coins or polymer money so we win. In a way we're the only ones who ever get that "tax savings" the newer money is supposed to represent lol.

Down here they have vending machines that take credit cards so... I am not too concerned about the vending machine companies. They want to cry foul because they have to revamp the coin slots... well they already did it once to take credit cards, I am sure they'll do it again, AND people would spend a coin faster than a paper bill. I am sure they'd be all about it in the end.

Dollar coins at the strip bar? Where would it go?

I like the Canadian Loonies and Toonies. Even though I have a stock of US dollar coins, I never use them. Back in the day I used to get Susan B coins back in change because they are so similar in weight and size as a quarter.

The higher denomination coins the better I say. Here in Japan we find the almighty 500 yen coins all over the beaches...currently worth $6.48 US a piece!!!!! Find ten or so of those in a day and it makes it all worthwhile, even when the silver isn't flowing. :D

I found a toonie yesterday (my first one) and it was all corroded in the center.
Looked like a zincoln. :( Need to work on cleaning it.
We need some quality coins

I use them every now and then. Although it's entertaining when you get the the "Deer in the Headlights Look" from the cashier. :D:D. If I remember correctly the U.S. Mint is running a series of these through 2016.

You oughta see the look they give when you hand them several half dollars, a dollar coin and a two dollar bill. That will make their brains disintegrate.

Maybe it'll prevent the pigs of the world from visiting the worthless places. I say good riddance to the dollar bill.

I think going with dollar coins are a great idea. Still don't see many in use here in MA although vending machines using them are more and more common.
I would like to see $1,$2, and $5 coins.
But, the mint does a bad job of designing these coins. Often they feel and sometimes look too much like a quarter. We could learn a lesson from Canada.

I agree. In the one link I posted. Open congress link allows you to sign up and vote for or against the coinage. If you support it gives you the option to send automated letters to your representatives.

When the saqa jo's came out , this is a long time ago , wal mart made us give 1 to each customer back in change on purpose.

So if you got back say 4.23 , you got 3 dollar bills, 1 saqa and a 23 cents.
