You are making us USA hunters sick. Sick sick sick . We can only dream of coins that old. And I love (oops, hate) the in-situ reveal pix !

It's cut in half on purpose, a silver penny was the smallest coin they had back then, so they cut them into half's and quarters to used as change.

That is some interesting historical information. It does make sense but I wonder what they used to actually cut it in half back then. Chisels? Or, did they have metal saw blades back in the day?

Probably had some sort of tin snips back then, they were quite evolved. They were made from a blank of silver between 2 dies and smacked with a hammer, hence the name 'hammered coins'.
A full coin is Dime size but about a third of the thickness, you can see how easily they were to lose, and no pockets to keep them in lol

 I can see that now

Nice ollllld chopped coin! Really puts our history here in the US in perspective.

How did you get the barber dime if I may ask? Did you happen to find it in Ireland? Maybe an American lost his dime he was intending to spend on a pint of Guinness?

Yes I've found a few Barbers here, probably dropped by troops as many were stationed here in Northern Ireland WW2, there was no troops in Southern Ireland as they were neutral during the war.

A few barbers? That's more than I've found in 6 years of detecting in Texas! I've probably only found 10 barbers over-all from the various states I've lived in.

Congrats and have fun with the ancient stuff!
