Default Camo painting Updated: Project finally completed!!

His Majesty had mentioned that after CRHing was ended, which it now is, that KT would get back to a previous hobby....that of camo painting some shotguns and rifles.

First please realize KT is NOT taking any high $$$ rifles or shotguns to do this. This is for woods beaters, single shots mostly, and some older guns that are showing their age, either due to wear, light rust, or otherwise...something that would sell in local pawnshops used for from $100 to $250. Keep in mind, KT very much dislikes black sticks! These are rifles and shotguns that look unnatural in the woods...many "survival rifles" and single shot shotguns used for survival purposes look this way. To the Royal Way of thinking, animals can readily spot an unusual Black Stick from far away. Especially very sharp eyed animals like crows, squirrels, etc. So to take that black stick and make it blend more into the background is the aim of KT's efforts. And this is all done with rattle can paints, essentially all camo types that can be purchased at WalMart or other hardware stores that have a paint section. To camo paint an object one needs to recognise not only what you want to achieve, but that the results often come out the reverse of what you expect. If you want a green and brown grass pattern, you have a green and brown underlayment, then you spray with the opposite color to achieve your pattern and KT uses mostly natural grasses, leaves, etc to get the effect He wants. You start with a base color, either light or dark and then work towards the other end, working lighter on dark background or darker on light background. When satisfied with the results, then everything receives a coat, preferably 2 light coats of matte clearcoat. This acts as a hardner and gives the gun a reasonable resistance to scratches and abrasion. Some folks use Ceracoat, and that gives ultimate hardness after baking, but KT has neither the time, money or patience for that option. And besides, let's face it, if you try something and you cannot get satisfied with it, just wash the gun down with paint stripper and you are back to the original look essentially.

So, today here it is 98 degrees F. in the shade and high humidity....a terrible time to start the process! 80 or below and lower humidity is better, more comfortable, and promotes more uniform drying and spray painting! So, there are no pictures of anything but the raw gun to be camoflauged and its carrying case, also which will be camoflauge painted. Again, KT dislikes Black gun cases and bags!

The gun that will painted is a Rossi Matched Pair single shot youth rifle and shotgun.....22 and .410 barrels, made by Taurus. The stock is hollow and contains several .410 shells, gun oil, fire starter kit, very small first aid kit (a few bandaids, small tube of antiseptic cream, bee sting pads, and a couple of stop bleed wipes) and a small bandana to prevent rattling around while carrying it. In the bag, are both a pull through rope cleaning kit for .22 and .410(not pictured), and you will see a bunch of .22LR cartridges. Those fit inside the universal forestock~50. KT picked this up used a couple of months back for $200 plus tax...and got a free used sling for it. The shotgun barrel is drilled for a scope but KT will never put one on it.

This would be a great gun to train your young son/daughter some shooting skills, but until they are older, do not let them shoot the shotgun barrel as it is too much for a pre-teen to handle.

Alrighty then! Below are two pictures, the first one of the carry case, and the second of the stock, 2 barrels, forestock and .22 rounds that fit into the forestock. You can certainly see what KT means by a black stick!

KT will camo the bag first, and will see how it looks with a grass type pattern!

Royal Thanks for your comments, Wolf-Dog! KT does try to give enough of an explanation for someone to begin to understand the process. Where did KT learn this process? From watching about 30 (!) YouTube videos....then He adapted what he saw to His own methods.

Default Start by camo painting the carry case!

Since the temps early this morning and humidity were tolerable, KT decided to start this project by getting the initial painting done on the Rossi carry case.

Photo 1 - Just a pic of the various matte paints KT uses in His camo painting efforts. The flat or matte black can is laid out so you, the viewer, can see what KT will use to initially cover the Rossi insignia...since it is a slick material over black canvas, it will still have some reflectivity, even after painting. But that is fine as patterns will help hide it...just does not need to be white.

Photo 2 - Shows the case after logo is blacked out.

Photo 3 - The case now has the first camo pattern on it, done with khaki and army green.

This must dry thoroughly before starting any finer detail patterns. But notice it already looks like a military pattern, with light and dark (but not black) irregular areas. Likely would be a good look for large objects like humvees or half tracks!

More to come soon!

Default Playing with grasses!

Now we come to the final stage on the logo side of the gun case.

First picture is of some tall grasses KT found on an ill kept "natural" section of the Castle property. These are spread over the already painted case in picture 2. Note that KT zipped the case closed and we shall spray each side of the case separately to maintain a more random grass pattern, like is seen in nature.

In picture 3, the case has been sprayed with both camo khaki and camo army green, while pressing down on the grasses somewhat. Then to add a bit of highlight, KT used flat black after moving the grass around to create a shadow effect. This side of the case is now completed and will hang outside overnight to dry thoroughly.

The next effort will be to complete the other side of the case in the same manner. NOTE: KT took great care not to get any paint on the case zipper!

Completed the grass pattern on the reverse of gun case....just a matter of a good drying and then to start on the Stock of the youth gun. KT will be using the same process....patch painting, then grass overlay.

Anyway, this part of the project is now finished!

It's coming along! Going to be a few day hiatus now due to the weather and various Royal Obligations! But now that KT is back in practice, it will be just a matter of Get 'er done! With the stock and barrels, they have certain parts like trigger, internals, and sights that will have to be masked off before the work starts, and they will have to be degreased before paint application.

We had rain this afternoon so with the humidity back up, KT will move the case inside this evening and let it dry in the Royal Dungeon!

Default starting the painting of the stock!

Prep work.....cleaning the oil off, then masking those areas, like the butt stock, trigger, hammer and Lever button, the couple of spots where wording is present....Police do not like identification markings hidden with paint! And the end where the barrel fits. And removal of the sling strap on the stock, and filled up the small hole with a bit of rolled up tape to keep the spray from filling it.

So the first pic shows the regular black stock, then 3 pics of the masked area, and then the first coat of paint - patches of flat army green and flat khaki to create the base pattern. This will have to dry overnight, before KT can turn the stock over and paint the other side with the base pattern. The stock could have been hung and it all painted, but KT would still have to take it down to apply the grass pattern. It will be hung to apply the matte clear hardner finish.

Enjoy the pics.

Hang in there, partyofone! It will be tomorrow before His Majesty can get the grass pattern applied to this side of the stock and then start the other side.

Then, of course, KT has both the forestock, AND the two barrels to do! All being photo documented, also! For all the Royal Friends on this here Forum!

The entire purpose is to hide the gun, not make it stand out!

good point !

....of course if it only glowed when you shined your UV light on it then it could help you find it if you misplaced it

Yep, with owner id info. Hidden in plain sight! Ha ha. Itís also very unlikely that anyone else could produce a matching paint since this is not a skin but a custom paint job.
