Ok, lets assume you've found some kind of key date coin (or heck, just a nice one) that you want to sell or get graded.

You pull it out of the ground and it's all crusted with dirt and/or whatever.

How much cleaning is ok? Do you just scrape the dirt off with your finger or something?

Drop it in a cap of olive oil as soon as you get home?

It seems like to even see what the coin is you'd have to clean it a little.

I guess my question is, how to I clean a coin enough to actually tell what it is properly?

I have always been told to never clean your coins. It will completely ruin the value. However, in some very rare cases (such as not being able to identify a possible rare coin), the following is a guideline I received from a local coin professional:
1. Create a warm (tap water ok) dish soap bath.
2. Gently (VERY GENTLY) rub the dirt away with your fingers only.
3. After cleaning, thoroughly rinse the coin with distilled water.
4. Dry coin with a non-abrasive cloth.

Be sure to rinse with distilled water due to containments in tap water.
Under no conditions use any chemicals other than soap.

Best option is to send to NCS to have coin cleaned and graded.

Great advice!!:D Especially about NCS conservation grading service. They have experts at cleaning and grading all types of coins and conditions.
