How to clean coins?

If the coins are collectible or valuable, cleaning will almost always reduce their value — sometimes by as much as 90% — and cleaning won’t improve their grading (the standards used by coin collectors and dealers to evaluate a coin), so you should usually let them be.

White vinegar or soapy water is a good way to clean them without ruining them. I would just try to get most of the dirt off to be decent. It's not worth the risk. When older stuff looks new, it just doesn't look right.

Many ways have been posted here just do a search for cleaning coins you might find something that works. Honestly just buy a tumbler from harbor freight save a lot of time.

i used toothpaste on my '44 walking half dollar. i just put a little on it, rubbed it between my fingers for like 3 minutes, then rinsed it off in water. but i plan on keeping it, too, and not selling, so i don't mind if it doesn't 'grade' as well.
