I'm now on my 3rd month of metal detecting and I've just found my 2nd hem weight. Are these things that common? The second one I found on the ground while walking to class.
A hem weight is made of lead and the ladies used to sew them in the hems of their dresses to keep the wind from blowing them up. They also had them in the hems of their swimming dresses to keep the water from making the skirt rise, because we have found alot of them in the water. It's possible men used them for fishing weights also.
Maybe it was used as a button? Not sure, never found one that small.
The ones we did find were larger than quarters. Maybe it depended on the type of material the dress was made of?
Maybe the ladies got tired of the weights clunking their legs and they started making them smaller. I don't know. We need to find a great grandma and ask her.
