Not knowing enough about what we do =trying to kick detector out of park

Interesting. Thanx for posting.

I wonder what would have happened if the fellow said his wife had lost her wedding ring there last week. Or that he was a Sierra club member removing toxic lead . I mean, shucks, there's a lot of ways to go about this, eh ? ;)

What is making it bad for us is like that guy in Salem OR. that only digs with a shovel because a digger hurts his wrists .. Digs a 8" round hole for a surface target.
We were asked to leave a soccer field that we got permission a couple days earlier Pay the parking fees $2 and have fun .. Our screw drivers and diggers make less damage than the soccer kleets since Covid no one uses the field anyway

So true.

Even worse though? I saw a video of him doing the same on people's meticulously kept boulevards. House owners were livid and he gave them the "It's public property so I can do this" BS. He showed a total lack of respect and regard for others. Double worse though? Most of the commenters cheered him on and congratulated him šŸ˜

I pay 3200 a year to slip my boat here in northern ca. Bylaw 5.7.56.4. bla bla says no metal detecting. Pleassezz. So I went the route of lost ring seeking permission to hunt the inland beaches for a day. Submitted my request to the board with my card and they wanted a 3 million dollar bond of insurance for me to hunt 1 day. Won't disclose info becasue I hunt on the islands after the weekend partiers leave. Know where to hunt because there is trash everywhere. Yes I've gotten clad and rings one chain, but I'm mostly the maintenance guy picking up trash including sharp objects beneath the sand.......

Redoc, in the case of what you are talking about here ^ ^ Why was it necessary to get their permission ahead-of-time to look for the commissioned posse-hunt for the ring ? :?: Why not have just simply gone and looked for it ? :?: And if anyone had approached or accosted you with the supposed "no md'ing rule" (although I suspect no one would have said jack-squat to you), then : At that time you let them know you're looking for the commissioned-hunt long ring . Eg.: Have the print out of the "lost" ad from craigslist L&F section. And I bet they would have said "ok, carry on, good luck ", etc...

But by going in and asking ahead of time : "Yoohoo, can I mother may I ? ", is only going to be a "pressing issue" . That gets passed desk to desk, until it lands on the desk of a desk-bound landlocked lawyer or archie . Who will give the "safe answer" to it. When truth be told : Probably no one ever gave two sh#ts if you or I had simply gone to look for a legitimate lost ring.

I mean, if you had simply just gone to look for the lost ring (assuming it's not an obvious historic sensitive monument), then do you really think anyone would have noticed you or stopped you ? And even if so, do you think they were going to dispute that a person can't look FOR THEIR OWN lost ring ?

But it is this notion that we somehow need express sanctions, and explicit say-so's, THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT LEADS to the "no's" and the rules IN THE FIRST PLACE. It's a vicious circle of : "No one cared UNTIL you asked"

No they are off the hook. That is how I first heard of they law. A man came up to me on a swimming point while my buddy and I were detecting and said "I hate to be the bearer of bad news" to which I replied "you're gonna tell me its illegal to metal detect". Yep bylaw bla bla. Retired park ranger from out there. I told him yea a kid just told me that and has his taken. I told em I have had a slip out here since 88 to which he replied "well then you know what time we go home" haa. I have had rangers just park and look so you never know ain't worth it to me. There have been 3 detectors taken, not by the rangers but by the sheriff department who were called. Sure it was code 3.
Oh I have gone in and asked and you get same story. Must submit a request to the board which I did.
10.2 To use a metal detector or similar device within any watershed. The last word might shed light on who we are talking about.

Never heard if they got em back but I would think so being nothing is stated for violations. I have an old atpro I just leave on the boat. And yea it was in a slalom ski bag when I took it out to the slip haaa.

........... That is how I first heard of they law. ...........

And I'll bet that the ONLY reason any law or rule exists in places like that, is because past md'rs (bless their little hearts) went asking "can I ?" questions , in decades past. The "pressing question" gets bandied around, desk to desk, till finally ... presto ...... a policy or rule or law is born.

And If someone loses a ring , and is doing a true commissioned posse hunt, then I don't envision any ranger that's going to say "no you can't look for your ring" and "I'm taking your detector". The only times you ever hear of detectors confiscated is for someone being an obnoxious nuisance, who can't take-a-warning. Or someone snooping around in obvious historic sensitive monuments. JMHO No one's going to get confiscations on an innocuous benign beach, when truly looking for an L&F issue.

Well the ol man knows more than me. And so this is the second time you have heard it. PM me and Ill give ya the lake and district in charge. I know you have heard of em go all the way to the bay. Whatever not losing a Nox 800 over a stupid bylaw. Would hope for a warning which was given as the story goes to the 3 by park rangers. Soooo next time out is when it happen. So come on up to the foothills and I'll watch ya hunt on the shore from my boat while I'm on a island detecting haaa.
