At Machine gun beach you have to dig a plug, break it apart with your foot and search it with Pointer. (See Pic 1). The black sand/mud/gunk mixture clings to everything; even gold! Targets to dig are thicker than thieves in Portland! In previous hunts at MG beach, I have dug well over 1,000 plugs yielding 562 coins, 4 silver rings, 4 junk rings, a bunch of sinkers and a LOT of junk targets. But never gold. I have never counted my junk targets after a hunt until now, to demonstrate the challenge at MG beach.

Spent 5 hrs today at MG beach and finally scored a 14k gold band (2.05g, VID=10 on Manticore, Pic 2) and a Spinner SS ring (junk). Also scored 26 coins, a few sinkers and an interesting brass token; Clearwater Pass Bridge/Sparkling Clearwater Florida. (Pics 3, 4) But what really surprised me was the number of junk targets I dug in the 5 hr hunt (Pic). Want to take a crazy guess?

To digress for a moment, on MG beach it is common to hit 10-20 or more targets per swing! Of course, as you more into the water the number of targets decrease. Walkable ground or “beach” may extend only 10-30ft or so into the water before the ground turns into quick-mud (same as quick-sand but mud) and your whole foot can disappear with each step, limiting huntable beach. Even within the beach area, the sand is mixed with sand/mud/soil/gunk by varying degree supporting sea grass with thin roots. Did I mention all the black sand in certain areas?

Today I hit the beach at low tide (primarily because of wind direction) and hunted as far out as the ground would permit. That way, I hoped to limit the number of junk targets “naturally”, w/o Discrimination above ferrous. Still, I didn’t walk a foot w/o digging a target. I often placed the coil on the next target, unintentionally, as I dug the intended target. On a nice sandy tourist beach, I could slowly walk 1-2 miles in 5 hrs. At MG beach today, I probably walked about 300-400 ft in 5 hrs.

Ok, I know the suspense is killing you. How many junk targets did I dig in 5 hrs?

In the 5 hr hunt I dug 182 junk targets! In addition to the good targets, in total, I dug well over 200 plugs, broke each plug up by foot and search each with my Carrot. For GOLD. No brag, just fact. The real question is; Was it worth it? We’ll see tomorrow.

Honey, where is the Advil, and acetaminophen, and aspirin….

Happy hunting.

You don't give up easy, do you? I checked the token- it's use started in 1978 and ended with refunds being handed out for left over tokens in Sept. 1996. Refund value? 12.5 cents! Yay! You can buy them cheap on ebay.
Thanks, I was wondering if I could retire...guess not on this "dime".
Interesting the dating of this beach and contents. Token 1980s, dog rabies tag from 1973, silver coin ring from early 1960 or before. Makes you think this beach isn't hunted much, given all the junk with such early dates. Even the silver rings that I've found there are heavily corroded and scrap. Good place to hunt when tourist beaches are cleaned out during Winter months. Do I smell Winter break just around the corner.

:dingding: It is such satisfaction after tough hours hunting to at least have 1 gold to show for it. Congrats!
