need some help ill be upgrading my detector soon and i want to do underwater detecting idk which one to get does the wireless work in the water or should i go with the wire headphones? the place i go the water is up to my hips thank you for the advise

Both are waterproof to 10 feet - the main detector box, shaft and coil. I use the AT Pro and have never water detected so don't know which headphones to recommend. The Max is like the AT Pro, just hopped up on steroids. I would NOT advise getting a Max, the Pro is far superior in tones, the Max sounds horrid, both have similar capabilities. I have a detecting bud that uses the Max, he wishes he had gotten the AT Pro. From what I've seen, the Max is the worst detector Garrett has come out with in the last 5 years.

Agree with LTS. AT Pro is a better choice. Wireless will not work underwater. You will need a good set of waterproof headphones. Good luck. Mark

I agree with the first two responders about the AT Max and I will add that I would buy the AT Gold over the Pro and the Max. Forget about the "Gold" moniker. The AT Gold running at 18 kHz is just a really good "do it all" detector with excellent features that is overlooked by most people just because of its name. Most people that are serious small gold nugget prospectors moved on from the AT Gold for that purpose years ago and went with detectors that operate at higher frequencies. For me the AT Gold should be called the AT Pro Plus or something like that since it has a really good, threshold based All Metal Mode.

When you say water is it fresh water or salt water? Single frequency machines like the Garrett AT PRO and Garrett AT MAX cannot handle the mineralization and Salt Water. You'll want a multi frequency detector for that.

Multi frequency Detectors like the Nokta Legend and Minelab Equinox 700 can handle many situations better because of all the frequencies they are using.

Feel free to call me glad to go over all those Detectors with you and be sure to mention you're from the forum for a special deal!

fresh water

AT Pro doesn't ground balance low enough for wet salt sand or surf but works very good in freshwater. Viper coil is slightly less sensitive to the stock raider coil with better separation. AT Max has an extended ground balance range and can handle the salt but the audio is tough to get used to and on the harsh side. If your not diving you can use the MS-2 wired headphones that are stock on the AT Pro for water hunting. I have for years without any issues.
I believe Garrett may be releasing a new machine this year so you may want to hold up.

Go wired and be done with it, AT has served me well in the water for over a decade with only 1 coil replacement, one of the very few things I don't like about it is the headphone connector is close to impossible to put on or take off, there is just no room for your fingers to turn it, so I get it as much as I can by hand which isn't very much, thread by thread, then I use some long needle nose pliers to lock it in.
That is one thing you don't want to have rattle lose on you and also, once you do it once you don't want to do it again, so in other words just leave them on and check them from time to time to make sure the connector hasn't wiggled lose.
