Congrats on the cut silver. A bucket list save for sure. Well done. MarkPhilip V cut 2 reale. I got the "17", wish I had the last two numbers! Still pretty exciting for me.
Thanks Mark! I've been fortunate to dig three pieces of Spanish silver, this being my oldest coin (piece). I love this hobby!Congrats on the cut silver. A bucket list save for sure. Well done. Mark
I'd found an 1/8 of a Charles III back when I first started detecting (December '22). For a fleeting second I thought it was just a piece of modern sheet metal LOL. Glad I took a closer look! It wasn't even down deep.Very nice! They are so small but when you see that shape come out of the ground you know you got something good.
Good question, re: cut at the mint. Seems like a good possibility. From my research, Spanish silver was used all the way up through the mid-1800s in the U.S. Silver was silver and its weight was its value, if that makes sense.Very interesting Find..Spanish reales com up from time to time in the UK, and it definately a coin on my bucket list..
Re cut coins in general, I have always wondered whether silver coins deliberately cut at the mint for circulation or did folks cut them while in circulation?
Also historically were silver coins clipped much in the America's?
