Magnet fishing

Take some dog food and push some steel shot into it and feed the catfish. When the fish are well fed, throw out a strong magnet and the fish will stick to the magnet. Now that is how you magnet fish..

It is hard enough sometimes explaining to the authorities as to what you are doing and to get caught doing that might be very hard to explain.

Magnet fishing only works on Steelhead.:laughing:(Oh, God, I kill myself.)

Here is some thing you might try on stream edges and has a easy release too.

Here is another one. I would only use the retangle shaped one from some thing that floats so when it snags you can move to a different angle to retrieve. So reviews said not all that strong but for small stuff would be ok I would think..
I am going to buy one to carry in my boat. fishing in Canada I lost a 25 pound darforth anchor. I could see it in the clear water 30 feet down. It had not been properly tied to the chain, I have since learned.

Has anyone tried this from a kayak? I live on the waterway and have my fishing kayak and am wondering how strong of a magnet I should try?

I think maybe I should clarify. Since I will be in a kayak I won't have the leverage that I would if I was on solid ground. Does anyone know the strength of magnet that I should use?

That second one looks good thanks. I could also use it as an anchor as well.

Just google "magnet fishing in a kayak u tube" there are several good videos

Never even thought about this, has my interest now (like I need another 'interest'!)

Has been big in Europe for a while and it is now growing very fast here and we have some suppliers that carry the different magnets and rope. I am pretty well hooked on it and sometimes it is hard because I usually have a metal detector in one hand.

You could slip on over to lake Wateree and hit a couple boat docks in the park.

Thanks for that idea, Lake Murray is another possibility.

I'll keep those areas in mind if I get into magnet fishing as they might be good areas for both magnet fishing and detecting.

While those areas might not be extremely far away, my being a caregiver for my wife's 92 year old mom with dementia limits how long I can be away from home at one time many days (my wife is still working for now) so usually I try to limit my away from home trips to about 1 1/2 hours including travel time which means I usually need to stay fairly close to home in order to minimize travel time. (not complaining, just explaining )

Anyhow, I'm going to keep magnet fishing in mind as a possible extra side hobby !

......and don't worry, I have a clearer understanding of it than Ken has in this funny pic :laughing::laughing:

magnet fishing

I noticed Harbor Freight has a variety of inexpensive ones different strengths , Though this might be some thing interesting to try in the Philippines next trip , some of their coins will stick to Magnets , might get one and try it here when i am going to hunt near a creek or lake. Thinking of doing some snorkeling next time in the Philippines, so a magnet might make it interesting .

Those from HF and home depot, Lowes are big and heavy and limited in strength. I started with those and have several of them, still rigged up ready to go. I use them in the areas that have some structure that may hang my magnet up and it would be lost. I like those every one uses today (strong neodymium) in the 3 to 4 hundred lb rating with a very good poly rope and proper knots.

Improper knots only mean I will be finding them while diving!
