IMO, a good pinpointer is just an extension of your detector. The detector tells you about where and how deep, but the pinpointer helps you get it out of the ground. I wouldn't hunt without a full detector, so I did get the Carrot and for me it was money well spent.

Do you need one? No.
Are they helpful? Yes.
I had to laugh. Yesterday i was digging a signal when the battery in my pinpointer died. I thought that I would go to the car and get a new battery and come back. I started to get up when I realized that I had hunted for most of over thirty years without a pinpointer because they hadn't been invented yet. I went ahead and found my target. Sure it would have been quicker with the pinpointer but it isn't necessary.
