So I have an older cheap pinpointer that I bought before I knew a pinpointer from a carrot (the root
vegetable, not the garret product). It works when it gets close to metal when testing it but I was
wondering if anyone had experience with these super cheap pinpointer devices and whether they are worth
trying to use or not. I haven't actually tried it in the field and was wondering if it would be worth the
effort to carry it around or should I just not waste my time.

Well that depends. What kind of PP is it? A picture would be a big help. I have had quite a few different types, some were good, some were ok, some got deep sixed.:waytogo:

The one I had was absolute garbage. Tried to use it yesterday...
Will stick with reputable brand poinpointer from here out. Now just
need to decide which one to get. The one I had wasn't branded
as garret, but it was almost exactly the same color and very similar
shape.

Buy once, cry once. A real Garrett carrot is a great choice.

Some people used to swear by that Harbor Freight cheap pin pointer. I bought one, I did some mods to it and it fell out of my finds pouch and broke. I can't even imagine trying to use that giant POS now. I bought a carrot and love it. Lost it, and bought a replacement which is cabled to my finds pouch now.

stay away from the cheap ones made in China, I bought one just for the heck of it. The thing is useless, it goes off as soon as it touches the soil and will not stop beeping. Had to walk back to the truck and get the carrot.

I'll be getting a carrot soon... definitely before trying to dig a park or field again. Was not fun trying to find
objects without a functional pointer in the park. Will be adding some nice digging gloves to the list for non-
beach digging as well... There were tons of geese in the park and I'm pretty sure some of what I was digging
through with my hands came out of their southern facing body part...

Garrett has great customer service and if you ever have problems they will make it right.

Yep! I have a carrot and a Whites TRX...both good pinpointers but I prefer the carrot!
The perfect setup is two pointers. I carry a TRX plus a Fisher F-Pulse. Great pinpoint and depth on the TRX with tip only detection and the F-pulse is just about as deep plus 360 degree detection. The Carrot works for that, for the most part, but the TRX is superior. If it was between the Carrot and nothing more, the TRX would get the nod. I sold my Carrot to a friend long back.

Your VLF TRX has about the same depth as your pulse induction F-Pulse? That's strange considering pulse induction pinpointers typically go at least twice as deep as good VLF pinpointers. Are you sure your F-Pulse is fucnctioning correctly?

My Nokta Pointer and my Carrot have about the same depth, but the Quest Pulse Induction pinpointer I had, went about 2 to 3 times deeper than both of those. That increased depth really comes in handy when the coin is near the center of the plug, and the VLF pinpointers can't detect it, but the Pulse pinpointers can. Ditto for pinpointing the coin even before digging. For example, if you want to dig a small diameter plug, or use the coin pop method, then the pulse can be used to find the target within about a 1" diameter. If the pulse doesn't detect the target, then the target is fairly to very deep.

My F-Pulse gets twice the depth on coins that my old Garrett Carrot did, and the TRX beats them both, especially on nickels. I hit 5 inches on nickels. The Carrot barely hit 1.5 inches. The F-Pulse hits them easily at 3 inches.

Ya, my Tekpoint PI (which is an F-Pulse) got at least twice the depth of my Carrot VLF and Nokta VLF pinpointers.

I'm just finding it hard to believe that your VLF TRX, hits deeper than your PI pinpointer. I'm going to see if I can find some TRX vs PI pinpointer videos.

It does, in air tests anyway. My TRX is right next to me in my living room and it rocks in detection range compared to my others in air tests with coins.

Holy smokes. I just checked out 2 videos that compared the TRX with the F-Pulse, and the TRX slightly beat the F-Pulse in the air and in the ground!

I never would have imagined a VLF pinpointer would beat a PI pinpointer. I guess it has something to do with the TRX concentrating the magnetic field at the tip of the coil, instead of 360 degree detection.

I started with a cheap pointer. I almost had to touch the target with it before it made any sound. Now I have a f-pulse I like it most of the time.
