Will Clad go through without problems in CoinStar?

Share your experiences with turning clad into the bank/coin machines... I have about $500 to turn in still!

Just knock off all of the loose dirt. Might have a problem with crusty zincs. You might have to keep putting them back a few times.

Also, some older brown/orange-ish quarters and dimes might keep getting rejected.

Otherwise no issues.

By the way.....I see they raised their fee to 10.9%.

I tumbled mine and used the local coinstar. It spit a ton of pennies back out (mostly ones that had been eaten away by corrosion) and a few quarters & dimes wouldn't go. I re-ran everything a few times and a few more would take but not all. I just threw the bad ones back into the change jar for next time. Maybe they'll go through then, maybe not. I also choose to get a Gift certificate for a place I know I'll spend money at and then fund my own pocket with the money I would have spent at the store. Avoids the coinstar fee.

Rise your clad off with water and make sure there isn't any chunks of dirt stuck to your coins. If there is then the sensor on the coinstar machine will get covered in dust and someone will have to open it and clean it off before you can put any more change in it. It happened to me awhile back. I tossed some barely cleaned clad in with my clean stuff. We live and learn lol

I clogged a coinstar with a jar full of coins I rinsed repeatedly. Still had to much dirt on them I guess. The sensor for the machine got dirty. Took the guy forever to open it up and retrieve my coins. I did see some nice silver in the reject tray in the back on the inside. Whoever empties that out gets some nice stuff. Anyways, I need to pick up a tumbler. I don't really want to spend hours trying to clean my coins enough to go through a coinstar.

I first tumble the coin for half an hour or better. Crustys I throw away.
I use a counter that has no fee, (Coinstar gift cert is a good deal tho).

If roll hunting, sometimes if Im dumping hundreds of $ worth of dimes, some dimes get counted as cents. No problem, I take my receipt to the counter, and they credit my account later for the mis-counted dimes.

:p

My credit union does it for free! But I haven't found any clad yet to take there so don't know if it will get stuck or not. Good luck!

Used a Coinstar last year and it was great, just don't dump all the coins at once or it will get bogged down. I noticed that it kicked back several Wheaties I had not realized I had, so it's being picky was a blessing.

I feel like even after tumbling my clad, I still manage to jam the machine every time. Last time I had the person with the keys beside me, opening and cleaning out jams throughout the entire process. I think next time I might just roll it and bring it to the bank. Not only are they taking 10 percent of my hard work, but I'm forced to make others work harder in the process.

just take it to a bank with a coin machine.. they still got to handle that dirty clad when you roll it and turn it in.. i think theyd rather use the key lol

I tumble mine, pennies separate.
I go through the pennies and remove the crusty/eaten/bent ones and throw in a junk bottle.
Prevents jamming the machine. My CU doesn't charge anything if you are a member. (I've had to help un jam the machine a couple times before so I'm a bit more careful)
If you have enough junk coins you can take to a fed bank to get redeemed.
Would be a great way to help a charity if we donated our clunkers.
No  I'm not volunteering :D
But I would send my Junkers!

You have a LOT of clad there. It would take awhile to tumble. It would really hurt giving coinstar $50 to take them but you wouldn't have to get them as clean as you would if you were to take them to a bank.

Me, I tumble mine as soon as I have enough to run a batch. Then, it gets spent in the soda machine at work or mostly giving to the kids for spending money at the pool/skate park. I never get the enjoyment of depositing a large batch of found coins
