Will a gold detector also find jewelry and coins?

I have decided to finally buy a metal detector, and start looking for stuff. I live in California, close to the Mother Lode. From what I have read, I think I've decided to buy a gold detector, still not sure which one. I don't want to take a chance on missing a gold nugget while I'm looking for them. I do spend time at the beach and camping in many places where I would be looking for jewelry and coins and stuff. My question is, will the gold detectors still find the other stuff as well? Which detector would you recommend? This is my first detector ever, and obviously there is that budget issue. Thanks for any help.

There are gold detectors sold by most manufacturers that are designed specifically to find tiny gold nuggets. Those detectors will find any kind of metal. The problem is they find really little pieces of metal. So if you were to take one of those detectors to the beach you would be finding real little pieces of foil and such. You would be spending your whole day in a 10 ft by 10 ft area going insane.

There are detectors like the whites mxt that are deigned to do both jobs well. It has different settings for prospecting. Not a true prospecting machine, but does a good job from what I read. The only problem is that the MXT is not waterproof and really doesn't do that well in wet salty sand.

There is the newer released AT Pro. I'm not sure how it does prospecting. I seem to remember a video of it detecting a gold nugget. This detector does ok at the beach in pro mode. It is waterproof to 10 ft. Some others will probably chime in. If this detector can be used for prospecting this might be your best bet for a do all. There have been some problems with some of the units. Make sure the dealer puts it together and tests it before he sends it to you if you choose this detector.

Mikey,
You have several good choices here. The Teknetics G2 and Fisher Gold Bug Pro are basically the same machine and both dedicated gold machines. Both are in my opinion the best machines in heavy iron out right now. VERY quiet running machines and great on small gold nuggets! Amazing at pulling coins and targets from heavy iron other machines have missed time after time. They both run dual processors and have an extremely fast recovery good for high trash or bad ground. Here are some guys raving about them.

Good videos here on both

Then you have the AT PRO. Has underwater capabilities which is nice! Very good machine for me so far. I am impressed with it so far but I still need more time behind it. Hasn't "WOW" 'd me yet. Great machine just not the end all be all it sometimes is getting billed as. Not as good in heavy iron as I would have hoped. Time will tell for me.

All theses machines will find any kind of metal or gold. The G2 and GB PRo will do a bit better on small nuggets. I can get you great pricing on both and would love to answer any questions you might have.
Thanks,
Bart

Thanks for the input guys, I'll be sure to scope those ones out that you suggested. I think I'm leaning to the GB Pro. Now just need to wait for my tax refund, and I'll be off. Bart, if you want to shoot me a price on the GB Pro, that would be fine. I will consider it when I'm ready to purchase. Thanks again.

Howdy

Howdy,
I had those same questions , and went with the MXT.
I have tested it on small pieces of gold and it works great.
If you research a little more, you will see that they use Mxts up in Alaska , nugget hunting too.
Anyhow, i noticed BIG BOY does not sell Whites, so I am sure he is partial to his brands.
But the MXT is an excellent all around machine heres a link you might want to look at http://www.findmall.com/list.php?25

More specifically, to answer the capabilities on the MXT and gold , check this out http://www.findmall.com/read.php?25,1257384

Good luck in whatever you choose, as the main thing is , get out and dig.

Concur with the above. My MXT is my "go to" detector for anything. I normally take two detectors with me when nugget hunting, either the Gold Bug SE or the Minelab X-Terra 705 Gold Pack depending on how big of an area I will be searching and how much time I have. The MXT always comes along for the ride.

not trying to hijack the thread here, but are there any "entry level" detectors that would be good for gold +everything else? light weight or that could be broken down and fit into a pack? i'm chasing a wild goose that is going to take me a fair distance into the back country, prolly a 10+ mile hike roundtrip... i'm fairly confident that with a bit moAr research and maybe a couple trips out, that this will payoff... either financially or at least physically! ;)

Generally the Pulse Induction detectors are very sensitive to the presence of ferrous metals (magnetic) and they are less sensitive to other metals. To satisfy our clients, we have incorporated into our Deepers' detectors a Drop Gold-Silver Electronic System that minimizes the prevailing presence of ferrous metals and maximizes the search depth detection for localizing gold, silver, bronze and cooper (and other good electrical conductors).

Gold Bug Pro or G2

The Gold Bug Pro or G2 will easily outperform the MXT. Same designer and engineer just 10 years advancement in technology over the MXT. The MXT is good but the new stuff is better and more current technology designed by the exact same engineer a decade later. More sensitive, easier to use, more features better performance and way better weight and balance.
Go with the current cutting edge easier to use technology with superior performance. Stay away from the 10 year old technology with confusing hidden menus and outdated performance.

Hope this helps

Starts at around $499 and is a high end performer.
