Why I hate 9 volts!

I seriously am hating 9 volt batteries with a passion now. Haven't been out in over 2 weeks plus since I had an issue with my detector. Had bad battery issues. Buddy was pulling silver and me nothing. So I found I had some low batteries, then one set was completely junk. Upon changing out one set I broke the terminal off the wires into the connector.
Terminal literally got stuck onto the battery. Had to have that terminal taken out and spliced in a new one.

So today I was out in the garage and I figure I'm gonna take a break from detecting. Been getting into coin roll hunting a little bit. I will go back to detecting at some point I'm sure. But just getting too discouraged.
So to avoid the batteries going bad or experience what i did with a flashlight I have(batteries corroded themselves into the flashlight( one of those expensive Stanley tripod ones too. There were so stuck it had to have the battery drilled and then yanked out with a screw in it. Even corroded out the side.

Wanting to avoid that I go to remove the 9 volts. One terminal(original to detector comes off battery just fine) I am using a screwdriver to gently pop them off, other time using my hand is when they broke. So I figure even pressure will be good.
I go to remove the 9 volt off the new terminal. One of the connections(large crimped one on battery breaks off. Now I'm annoyed. Brand new batteries too. It's like a piece of cardboard holding the terminals on and looks like a little bit of glue on the end. So lost a battery because I don't think I can get the terminal back in the hole. Don't want to have detector issues again.

I really wish my detector took AAs now. Alot more convenient and no terminals to get stuck or break off.

Whoa, that bites! :wow: I don't think that I would enjoy detecting at all if I had to deal with issues like that. All I can say is, it's time for an upgrade.

yea i hate those 9 volt connections, i'm lucky my machine takes AA's, i'm also glad that garrett didn't use those connections on their propointers and the 9 volt just slides in.

This detector is an upgrade so it will be a while before I can get another. My old one didn't have this issue. Wish there was some way to connect a battery pack with AAs into the 9 volt plug. Probably possible but I don't want to lose performance either.

Mine takes two 9 volt batteries, so got twice the chance of failure. Know it will be an issue eventually. Will open up the box, and solve the mystery of whether they are in series, parallel, or used as a split rail (probably, for the opamps). Then I'll see if I can replace with lithium-ion pack(s). Alkaline batteries last a good while, but the lithium would last for months and be rechargeable as well, plus I wouldn't need to physically remove them to charge them.

Have used many Tesoro's that use a single nine volt battery, most of them they just push in and shut the battery door and some of the older Tesoro's used a battery clip, never had a problem with any of them. The battery last a good long time in the Tesoro's. The only thing I don't care for is some of the Fishers/White's/older Garrett's/etc. uses 2 nine volts batteries as it can get pretty expensive when you have to use 2 new ones instead of just one.

The cause of corroded batteries or corrosion inside a battery compartment is neglect .

I don't think I could ever get used to a detector that had "connectors." Just drop it in and that's it : the only way for me.

They aren't that bad :dontthinkso:

My BH505 had that problem under warranty and they fixed it very quickly. I was almost going to replace the standard wire harness with one of these better snap on harness holders. I've been very carefull every since. Don't know why they don't use these... I've saved this link for next time if it happens. Not to be confused with Kellyco. This is Keystone Electronics Corp.

Crappy bounty hunters. That's what I had to deal with with the 202. Horrible design. Get anything else that takes AAs....I hate 9vs too, even in the garrett pro pointer. I'd rather stick 4 AAs in it.

Yeah I got this 505 cheap so had to deal with this housing issue. My other one they just slid right in. That is the ideal way. Had new batteries when I got the 505 used so then they finally ran out of juice. Then the whole mishap when I went detecting. Now this when I decide to put the detector away for a while.

Upon looking at the piece that came off the battery, it is a very poor spot weld to the battery. I've sent Duracell and email complaint. I hope I can get something out of it as batteries are far from cheap.

Maybe you could pry the prongs out a little on the larger connector on the detector and the larger one on the battery so they don't grab as hard. Then the battery will be easier to install/remove without damaging the connector.

I can't believe with the current voltage regulators that any company is still using those archaic 9Vs. I hate them, even though two of my detectors use them. There aren't even any good rechargable 9vs. Whats up with that?

I don't see any problems with my 9-Volt detectors...My G-2, Omega, Silver Sabre & Troy Shadow...Slide cover off, pop one 9-volt in, could'nt be any better and get at least 25hrs. on one single 9-volt. My Fisher F2 takes two of them though but still very pratcial for me. Very light to pack around for all my detectors + ProPointer. I haven't seen a 9-volt with clips in a very long time, are they still making any units with clips?

I beg the differece ;)

One of the BOGO detectors I got from KellyCo is a Titan 2000XD. The detector works OK, but installing or removing the two 9V's is a nightmare. The "prongs" that hold them in place are solid plastic - no movement whatsoever. I had to take a hammer and beat the bottom of the batteries in about 1/8" to get them to finally fit. Removing them requires a long screwdriver and you get to practice your "coin popping" skills......

Oh man Dusty, that BOGO detector sounds BOGUS to me :lol::lol:. Sorry couldn't help myself.

9v you are wright

i was going to hunt with my cz70 pro the other day i put 2 new 9 volts in it a couple of months ago, never used it,fired it up yesterday, only 2 bars instead of 3:mad:,never used it,so broke out the F75 4 aas runs a long time, all manufactures need to get away from the 9volt battery set up,i don't care for it anymore, good thread,Earl

Ended up sending a complaint to Duracell because there is no way the terminals should snap off the battery that easily. They are going to send me a coupon for batteries. Hopefully it is worthwhile and gives me some savings.
