why I am mostly active on this forum

Was there a predecessor to this forum with friendly in its name but a different name, and a female mod ?
Seems to ring some sort of bell with me, they were anything but friendly to me, I was banned from there too, and that was over calling out some guy for posting a mint condition flying eagle cent allegedly found in his backyard [and of course it had to be an 1856 worth a cool $10k or so], I found the pics he posted on another site and the thread really blew up ,, But I had no doubt I was in the right, I can't stand frauds.

Dankowski is Ok, got some old school heavy hitters there and occasionally some exclusives but yes the layout is a joke, looks like something from 1995.
They kind of have their own little group. Cool for them to avoid serious debates.

Years ago I had joined but made the mistake of questioning the messiah. I saw the typical onesided questions but I knew what was being said was wrong. I made the mistake of pointing it out. I was jumped on like flies on S**t LOL. How dare I doubt their master's answers. Everyone makes mistakes, but not everyone is held accountable. Haven't been back since.

Like my phone, I use mainly voice to do everything. You have to train the voice recognition engine to get the best results. Some of the translations of my phone texts and posts online crack me up.

I'm still new to the online forum venue, surfed 3-4 sites before settling here. On one site, felt like I stumbled into some Wicken or Coven, off-color forums covering anything from soft porn pics to extreme views seemingly hovered around by a core of a dozen or so bloggers with diminished MD content. No time for nonsense like that. Agree with others, some serious and fun detectorists here, good content/finds and love the stories and especially the good humor. Good to commune with others who still love playing in the dirt and sifting through sand/surf.

and 300 baud dial up modems:no: didn't handle pictures very well. Had to wait for ever. And frequent disconnects!!!!! Those were not the good old days of Internet surfing that is for sure. Once you have fiber running in front of your home, you cannot go back to a slower connection.

In the mid 80's I was using first generation BBS forums. Even those forum posts were much easier to read than the posts on Dankowski forum.

When I first when to the Dankowski forum, it looked so bad that I thought they were having a temporary formatting problem lol. I was thinking about checking out their new forum, but meh. FMDF and DP cover all the bases for me.

I was the SYSOP (systems operator), and Co-founder of TnT's BBS back in the 80s. I had 4 line and started with 1200 baud modems running on my 286 computer. I managed one of the few metal detecting forums of the day. The only BBS between Oklahoma City & Denver Colorado at the time.

Back in those days, the forums I encountered were for computer guys talking about computers :)

The fact that in those days, you had a metal detecting forum is really cool

That's exactly how I feel about Danks. I looked a few times here and there , read some posts , decent info. But I would never attempt the mental hopscotch of a layout gone horribly wrong to log in and sign up.

I heard of bbs but never used it, probably thought it was nerdy and was too busy carousing. I think right around when windows 98 came out was my first time online, I remember the gurgles of the 14.5 modem trying to connect, and it was kinda magic when it did. Napster, downloading songs for free wow ! But to get a whole album would literally take all day, trying up the phone line ,, And then, nothing to do with the song besides playing it on the computer. Higher dl speeds, recordable CD's and MP3 format changed everything, get an album in an hour and burn it to CD and play it on your walkman ,, I got one of the early CD burners, about the size of a microwave but it burned CD's and I was like the magic man to my buddies, people could not believe that was possible.

So thats all quaint compared to what we have now, I guess in 20 years when we can get a song beamed straight into our head chip, todays tech will seem quaint.

The heyday of my computer education. I could, and still can, put together a modem connection string in my sleep. I prided myself on being able to make modems speak to each other reliably. It was a skill all its own. All that squeaking and squeaking you'd hear as your modem would perform a handshake was the modems talking to each other. Telling how fast they could handle, and what protocols they could understand and use. I went from 1200 baud through to 9,600 with V.32Bis. About the time the Internet made it to our area. We ran TnT's for a short time on the Internet, but there were BBSs springing up everywhere and we were getting old, so we dropped out.

It was what I learned with running TnT's that got me my job with HCA back in 1995. There were no courses you could take back then, it was all self-taught & experience. HCA asked me to move to Nashville to instruct new hospital IT departments on how to build & maintain networks. I was offered a huge salary and I passed it up. I was asked if I would document how I was doing things and upload them to HCA so they could be made available to other hospitals. I even heard some of my documentation made it to the classrooms of the new computer courses being offered at schools.

Funnest thing I remember was being asked about setting up Zmodem resume. XMODEM & YMODEM were fairly known as one could send/receive multiple files, but ZMODEM was a batch file process. Game changer.

I was a sysop of a local programming BBS in Atlanta. I knew the marketing director at the time of Hayes Microcomputer Products. He gave me four free 1200 baud modems to replace my 300 baud modems. What an upgrade at the time. Talk about high speeds! Hah. Met a lot of really nice propeller heads locally back in those days. Talk about technology moving forward fast. From the 286 and upward it was a fast and exciting ride. I once saw a projection of chip speed projection by Intel and they met and surpassed that project. But at the time it was unbelievable what they were projecting just 5 years down the road for cpu speed.

Sadly Hayes Microcomputer products eventually failed. Dennis Hayes failed to take the foreign made modems seriously. He was happy to collect royalties on the AT Modem Command set he and his partner Dale Heatherington created. Virtually every modem manufacturer back in the day paid him royalties on all their modems using the AT command set. That basically was all modem manufacturers. I think even to this day most modems use the AT command set. The AT command set allowed software to control the modem's features and functions which was a big deal compared to what you could not do without using the AT Command set.

I built my first website back in the 90’s. It had a BBS with stringed threads, but it was still easy to navigate. Most of the old forums were stringed threads before forum software like vBulletin and PHPBB became popular. I remember posting on The Treasure Depot and several others which were all stringed threads, but still easy to use. I just couldn’t make heads or tails out of that mess that was running on Tom’s site.

Rattlehead,

Did you happen to check out his new forum? I was going to create an account and check it out...then meh lol.

For those wondering, this is what that forum posts used to look like:

I just went to the new one to check it out. From what I can tell it looks to be improved with a more traditional layout now, but I couldn’t really see much without logging in. I don’t remember my password. I think I have it saved on my work computer.

OK call me slow. Did someone create a new forum?
ok, Slow.
They are talking about the improved Dankowski forum, I forgot about that, they did upgrade its look and functionality.
[Right now its read only, don't know if the site is dormant or some kind of temporary bug]

I ask myself that question lately. I spend probably 90% of my time forum time on this forum and 10% divided by the other Metal detecting forums.

First and foremost it is because of other good forum members. 3 of my top five "go to" forum members I convers with via private message questions about detecting are active on this forum. Secondly this is a Friendly forum for the most part. When some posts start to get unfriendly the forum admins are pretty quick to straighten things out and even banning some trolls who just try to stir things up among forum members.

Thirdly we get a lot of questions from experienced members and total novices. Reading these post is part of my learning experience and it seems I am forever learning. Some of these advanced SMF metal detector updates from the manufacturer tend to keep us learning if we choose to download and install the update. Imagine having a new car and every 3 months there was an update that required you to re-learn some things about driving your car that you have mastered. Thank goodness cars don't receive updates. Or do they?

Then there are fewer of the tin foil hat theories bandied around on this forum than another forum. And when these tin hat theories do pop up in posts, they are pretty much debunked by members who don't fall for any long range detectors, dowsing rods or distant viewing nonsense.

Lastly our admins and owners of this forum are very passionate about the hobby and it shows.

Thanks Maxx... We try to let the members police themselves when something comes up its only when a post is reported that we will discuss it and try to take care of issues in private.. we prefer not to ban members.. its just not who we are.. everyone is entitled to their opinions... in 18 years of moderating here I can count on 1 hand how many I have given a time out to...

These days we are busy with making sure spammers don't get through... we had a rash of sleepers recently that had signed up years ago and never posted but we think we took care of them... we eliminated a bunch of the non posters which were in the thousands I think Vlad got rid of 5 thousand or more... we haven't seen any sleepers since...
