Why Do You Metal Detect ?

It is very peaceful and relaxing to me. The bonus is finding somthing that someone dropped or lost before. Some of my finds have not seen the light of day for decades.

i do it to clean up the beach
and make the world a better place..
also to look at all the eye candy in bikins:yes:

Well, I am a nerd at heart for one. I think most of us that do this love history and technology and it is the logical cross roads of the two. The other thing is no matter what anyone will tell you, the chance you could find something REALLY valuable (gold coins ect ect) appeals to that inner kid in us all looking for treasure. Most of us will never find it but there is always that hope and the love of history keeps that fire burning too.

The very idea of holding that 1850 seated half dime I found in my hand that I found in the middle of the woods was awesome. I knew the last person to hold it was most likely one of my family members a long time ago (found on family land). It was an amazing feeling. Not to mention it gets me away from the every day stress of life.

Because it shivers me timbers... wait that was yesterday..
I actually didn't like history in school, but with metal detecting I love being able to apply and preserve it. I guess you could say I like being hands on.

I Got a Fever... and the only prescription is more METAL DETECTING!

The thrill of the hunt and my love of the outdoors and history. I get bored very easily if a hobby isn't challenging so I love finding those deep faint targets around an old house and pulling out silver.

Heck, I've only been detecting for a couple weeks and I'm hooked. I swear I didn't get the idea from a TV show (didn't even know there was a show on about MD'ing until I got to this forum). I've always wanted to, but never had the time or money. Now that my kids are not toddlers anymore, they go with me. I find the target and dig the plug, then hand them the pinpointer and a small (less sharp) shovel. While they're digging I'm looking for the next target. They want to go "treasure hunting", and will put all the pull tabs in their pockets like it's found money. My wife gets some alone time (I have 4 boys), and I get to be outside with my kids, pretending to be searching for pirate's treasure with them. By the way, I got a Eurotek Pro from Bart, and the thing is amazing, especially for a starter detector. The thrill of the hunt, spending time with my kids, and wondering how something got lost/dropped in the first place (except for trash). I'm definitely hooked.

I do it because it's cheaper than fixing up my 1941 Chevy pickup. I may sell that and get better detectors.
I do it cause of the thrill of the find, what it could be next, and the history behind. I do it to relax until I've pulled one to many pull tabs. I relax by keeping busy if that makes sense. Hate to sit idle. It's also similar to what I did in the Navy (EW), listen to radar signals and identify them. well it will be once I have a more-than-one-tone detector...

I'm writing a book, "Pulltab Evolution." Seriously... though... its the mystery of the underverse that draws me. Also, love the conversations I get into with people who say, "I've always wanted to do that."

Needed a hobby after I quit (drinking & smoking). Now metal detecting is my addiction. At least I'll stay out of trouble.:police::jail::detector: I love digging money out of the DIRT!

Because I absolutely love history. I'm not in it for the money (I'd be screwed if I were..lol). When I detect a site I do lots of research. Every little artifact no matter how small or worthless tells a story of the history of that site. I feel like part Indiana Jones, part Sherlock Holmes, and partly Fred Sanford. :D

That last sentence sums it up for most of us, I imagine. I love it!!!
