Planning a long day out, I usually like to pack a few things:

Water bottles
Granola/protein bars
Towel
Extra socks (I HATE wet socks)
Pen and paper for notes
Hand-Held GPS (I have a cheap one we use for geocaching-- it's a good way to mark exact spots you want to return to)
Camera
Extra batteries
Extra trash bags
Flashlight
First aid kit
Emergency rain poncho (the dollar and a half type that folds down to pocket size)

All this stuff takes up surprisingly little space in a backpack. What other items do people bring along?

Just curious.

I use to carry alot, probally too much.
Everything from maps to shovels.

Now days it's just the bare essentials.
I look more Recreational or Hobbiest.

On a road trip: GPS and Laptop
Gearwise: Packed for Land and Water Hunting

It's a Urban Hunting Style for me.
Always a Store or Vending Machine nearby.

MONEY FOR THE METERS AT THE BEACH!!!

I keep my stuff in the car so I'm always ready to detect during breaks from work or whenever.

MXT,
Bullseye II and backup HF pinpointers,
jeans, t-shirt & shoes so I can change from my work clothes,
Lesche,
headlamp,
2 screwdriver probes,
cell phone,
latex gloves,
and a partridge in a pear tree.

BANDAIDS.

For windy days on the beach I can use them to tape the earbud cord
to my chest.

On long dirt hunts, I wrap my fingers in them before they get raw from
the digger.

and then there are the occasional boo boos.

Bug spray (for deep woods)
All the usual accessories (MD, Lesche, PP, vest, containers, water, gloves, band aids)
Pistol
Knee pads
Two clip on knives
Hat
RickO

packing?

i take the typical things but change up for parks, beach, tot lots and if my wife goes or not. minimally...digger, garrett pro pointer, headphones, screwdriver, nail pouch ($1.19 at Lowes for finds).

packing? used to take a barretta 22 but now taking a ruger sp101. i go to a range at least once a month (usually 3 or 4) and practice. hope i never ever need it but if i do i don't want to "fumble and fiddle"...hence the regular practice. i won't stop at a park that looks risky but have hunted at parks that were empty when i got there and loaded up with some creeps. only been "harassed" twice...hate it when they block my exit...glad i was packing.

packing!!!

Wow,,, I didn't know that many carried. I do myself (short nose .357 mag revolver) I have a license so I keep it on a belt holster in plain sight. In all the years I've been detecting I have only been approached twice. Once by a game warden and once by a city police officer and then only the police officer asked to see my license. If you have a license I highly recommend carrying in plain sight. Everyone leaves you alone, I think they are thinking I'm some kind of police officer looking for clues. If they have kids they keep them away also. The only time anyone approaches me is when I have a long coat or sweater that hides the "package" While my license is for "concealed" I prefer keeping it plain sight. I really like the "wheel pistols" if its pointed at you there is no mistaking its real, and the mag is so dam loud it scares me at the range......Just my thoughts on this, thanks for reading.....lobo

A year ago I would have laughed at the amount of stuff you all take. I'm going metal detecting, what do I need besides a metal detector?

Of course, I've gotten a lot better in the last year! And my kit has grown to reflect that.

On my person - MD, propointer, digger (usually my trusty nailpuller), cell phone
In my car kit - spare MD, different diggers (shovel, planter's buddy), bug spray, rehydration

How about a caddy to help you carry all this stuff?
