Weekend field hunts, Large cents, indians, silver, buttons

stuff from fields is all research Richard, and getting permission for fields is so much easier than getting permission for yards! Fields is where I find my real old stuff! Crazy thing is, there are more homesite locations in the fields than houses still standing, at least 10 times as many!

I havent tried a field yet. Its been really muddy here. I am in corn central and am surrounded by fields. I have an 1880 map book here. I found the location of multiple old schools around here. Houses too.

The one closest to me was hunted last year by a guy that found a huge old gold ring at it. I dont know how many times I had drove right by that ring.

Im gonna try to go hunt one before the year is up. I actually thought that farmers would be less likely to let you hunt fields. They arent known to let anyone go out on land around here. Guess I wont know till I ask.

Great hunt! The large cents are in very good condition. Tokens are especially cool as they are often regional or local, and are a nice piece of Americana. Congrats, and have a good winter doing more site research.

Nice. Great finds...How come your large cents are in such great shape?! The one I found, a date was nowhere to be found. It must be the ground that the cent sat in. How deep were the large cents and what type of soil was it in? Was the soil loose or hard?

Anyway, I'm jealous. Great job, though!

both were less than 3" deep, it was a farm field that is tilled every season so nothing ever gets deep. It seems like LC's hold up pretty well in the soil here, it is very kind to coppers

Don't get discouraged. Having lived and hunted in Wisconsin I can attest there are many people there not very open to strangers showing up. There are also a lot of people who are happy to let you hunt.

Hang in there and keep knocking.

Try New England! I was born and raised in CT and have to say that until you get to know the people here, they are a COLD bunch.... Very suspicious of everyone. But once you make a friend here, they are friends for life!

Nice variety!

Nice variety, thanks for sharing. Well, this computer room in my home that I'm in now, WAS an original old one room school house! I had hoped to find interesting stuff, but I think with adding the Colonial addition in 1900 (the only date recorded in town hall) the grounds have been disturbed. Then a new water line was added at some time, disturbed even more. This was my 3rd summer here, so still getting familiar with the small property. Wish I could get under the crawl space, the water well is still there. cool! :D
