UPDATED WITH FINDS; Could these wheat penny rolls be the real "unsearched rolls?"

If I'm not mistaken, the state has the incentive to make the listing get as much money as possible because when someone claims the money the government gets a portion of the money as income tax or the government collects the entire sum of money after X amount of time it because they only have to hold it for a set amount of time legally.

That would make sense, so I checked and this is what it says it does with the funds:

"The State of acts as a custodian for abandoned funds and holds these funds in perpetuity. In other words, there is no time limit for claiming your money from the State Treasury. If at any time you can prove ownership of legal rights to the unclaimed funds, the State Treasurer will approve payment to you or your heirs without charge."

Maybe it isn't that way in all states but this one it is. AL

How do you come across these auctions? Seems like something that might be of interest to me if I knew how to go about participating. You say they shipped the stuff to you so is it an online auction you were part of?

Ever thought that maybe the rolls might be the 'keepers', or all one date or mint? Sorted, to some extent?

I collected the state quarters, and started out, intent on getting a roll for each state, figuring that at the end, there would be some increase in value, either as a complete set, or to people looking to fill in a few holes they missed. Got a bunch of unsorted ones, couple dozen rolled up. Just sort of lost interest, when some were pretty hard to come by. Do have 4 completed sets, set aside, probably a couple more in the unsorted.

A safety deposit box, almost entirely for pennies? Think there are some very special pennies there. A year's rental, would be more than the value, if they were just common dates, or the owner didn't know. If he was hoping, there would be other 'hope' items, and articles set aside as well. This box is almost all pennies though, and have to think there is something significant about that.

Unsearched rolls are the ones with rolled paper ends that can't be opened without ripping the paper. They do exist, because I've gotten them from the bank... guess they didn't know they were wheats.

My question, is how can they say they're unsearched without knowing that the owner didn't search them? Maybe they're just saying that THEY didn't search them? :?:

Where did you find the listing for the safety deposit box auction?

I did a google search for "abandoned safe deposit box auctions" and found out that several states have auctions like that.

Interesting finds,....must have been fun to the war nickels.

Was the price you paid worth the finds?

If it had not been for the War nickels and the Indian heads I would have paid too much. There is a lot of competition for these lots and many go too high, unless you get something rare.

That looks like a lot of fun. I would have had a blast discovering those keepers on your lot!
Love the war nickles and steel pennies. You could probably sell most of the steel pennies one at a time, make some of your money back and still have one of everything.
