Update on possible meteorite

I just got back from a local museum and planetarium... I called them and he said even though he wasn't a expert he would look at my find.. two guys came up and looked it over and talked about it and decided it wasn't a piece of slag but are not quite sure so they gave me the name of a meteor expert and I have since emailed him the pictures.. at ASNH.org hopefully I will have more info sooner rather than later...they did tell me though that they were searching for a couple around here that fell last year... I won't disclose that info though where they went landed...

Here's a couple things you can do yourself to help decide if it's a meteorite.

First, a bulk density test. Here's a detailed video on how to do it:

PM me the number and I can look at a chart I have.

Second....grind a small window into it. I know, that sounds like a horrible thing to do, but in order to PROVE it's a meteorite...it will have to be done eventually.(Actually, a slice will have to be sent to a lab.)
The same guy has another video showing how to "window" a meteorite:

There are also two good meteorite forums where you can ask advice:
Sky Rock Cafe
Meteorite Junction

Personally, I think there is a very good chance you have a meteorite.

GOOD LUCK! and keep us posted!!!

Cf whats the Verdict? been wanting to know.

The guy I contacted is still teaching and he asked me to wait until school is over... I think school gets out the 18th... then I will meet him at the Peabody Museum in New Haven...

You're killing us!!! Just send it to me. I live a few miles from NASA. They'll surely be able to confirm it for you. (didn't mean to call you shirley)

I'm in no rush :D

Here is a few lines from two emails he sent me..

Dear Craig, What I see in the pictures looks very much like an Iron meteorite!!! I would love to see it. Write down all you can remember about where and when and any surrounding structures you remember from when you found it!

Have not had time to pick a place to meet but wanted to let you know I am still very interested in seeing the sample. Did mention it to a meteorite dealer I know and he is very interested too. I did not mention any names to him to keep it private. End of school year for me so since I teach but will be free very soon. Hang in there!
I hope that makes you happier

I watched a few episodes of Metorite Men the other night and they found one that looks just like yours and weighed about 3.5 lbs was worth $25k. I am crossing my fingers for ya.

A little update...

I met someone who collects meteorites and he brought a few with him and I want to share them... he explained iron meteorites, stony one and iron ones with precious stones in them... my favorite is the iron with peridot crystals imbedded in it...

My whatever is still a whatever... he is sending it to someone who will do more tests as everything is still inconclusive because it was found in saltwater...

Anyway enjoy the pictures...

I can't resist this one after our emails.....I though you and PI Joe didn't dig any iron :lol: Big iron can be good.

Darn, I have really been waiting for the results on that find. Thanks for the update. I am still hoping for you.

Chuck, I apologize... it had a different sound than standard iron...

Chuck,

When you get as good as master Craig, you can discern the sound differences between man made and extraterrestrial iron. :D
