In Wisconsin's Tundra
Finished my first permission in a little over an hour then went to my second for a major effort in my longest outing of the year. Between both sites a combined time of almost six hours. The first site of which this was my third time here I added another Barber along with a Merc to the count. These make the total of a even dozen to the Silver Count from this site. The place was a complete surprise as to what it held. My second permission was a Church yard built in 1870. Needless to say I had visions of some great success going into this place. Well things were just not going to fulfill those aspirations. First I should say I had never hunted dirt as to this location anywhere before. The surface that held a straw y grass vegetation with roots barely a inch deep. Below that seemed to be a mixture of a black sand ash that held no consistence, almost a complete powder. That was every hole I dug and seemed to refill itself as I was trying to pull it out. I dug a few square nails along with some rusty old bottle caps. I decorated this with clippings of tin and aluminum making my finds a little more colorful. I put in about a hour and a half and was considering call this one a complete bust. Up to that time I had not even dug a Zinc Penny. I had made up my mind this location had been hunted by others in the past so I was going to work back to the truck and give it up. Made it maybe 3 steps when I got the coil over a very nice signal that said was about 7 to 8 inches down. A little effort emptying the hole when I seen shine on the bottom of the hole. Seeing this I went back to the truck a got my camera. I did not know what it was but wanted to show the conditions of the dirt and show the coin as I first saw it. Anyway I could not see details until it was in my hand. The coin a dime is my first Seated of the year making a trifecta of dimes with what I dug at the first location. I continued the hunt with the hope of adding more older finds but this turned out to be the big highlight. After this I added a couple of Wheat's along with some modern clad. Every coin I dug from this site came out of the ground like the first. You could literally blow the the powder off the coins. Anyway sorry for being a bit long winded here. The 3 silvers now have me at 15 FTY. Trapper

Very nice Trapper! That Seated Dime sure looks good, and that sandy powdery soil is interesting for sure! Congrats on the Barber and Merc and Wheaties!

Good hunting! Sure looks purrty in the hole. Even though there wasn't much else at the church, the seated made it worth it.

Thank you for the reply David. All the coins from the churchyard came out of the ground fairly clean. The two Wheat's I could see the dates just by blowing the powder off, one was 1919 the other 1925,neither had a mint mark. Drainage on this location must be fantastic. We had about a half inch of rainfall early that morning and another hard downfall on the trip between the sites. It was still misting when I began hunting at the church. Trapper

Those are amazing. Great finds for sure. Keep swinging.

Thank you Mark. As time allows I have high hopes to still go back to my original plan of hunting my childhood neighborhood before my Spring went haywire. In the mean time I will continue to swing close to home as I get permissions. It's been doing pretty okay so far. Trapper

Trapper, congrats on the dime trifecta and silver #15 FTY with a great looking seated dime. I was fortunate enough to dig a seated dime earlier this year. Like you have not been getting out much and I'm still looking for #15. Hopes it a Barber, haven't dug one of those yet this year. Glad to see you are getting out and wish you continued success. Mark

Trapper, once again, you manage to find some good quality finds. And your write-up adds to the climax of seeing what you have have found this time around. Those Seated dimes sure don't come often but when they do, it always a special treat to find and for me to read about. Congrats on another fine hunt and look forward to what your sweet #16 fty will be! John

Great hunting story and nice finds. I visited one place last fall similar to what you described. The top layer was grassy roots and weeds only about 1-2 inches down, and below that was very fine granular sandy soil. I'd take a scoop of sand out and it would just backfill it was so fine and granular. Found a Merc, a couple IHPs and some wheats at the spot...very different soil than usual.

Totally agree with your reply, thank you.. I can say that if the only Silver is Seated, it more than satisfied the effort on the location. Had hope of putting some Indians into the coffers as they have been very rare finds for me in recent years but it was not to be.Thought maybe I find some old relics also but they just were not here. that is a beautiful coin Trapper, congrats on the seated as well as the other silvers.
Thank you Pete. As nice as the coin looks in the picture, it took several shots with the camera to capture the details. There is some ware on the coin. I think that the ground had something to do with it. Trapper

Thank you Mark as your replies are always greatly appreciated. The Seated was the true highlight of the church site and put a big grin on my face. Still I can not overlook the farm site permission as it provided 12 of the 15 Silver's in my years count. My last hunt there I dug 6 in a pretty great day out. That includes 3 Barbers and the Stander. Time is still not my ally but things are beginning to ease off a bit so maybe I will be able to get out a little more often in the future. Looking forward to seeing some more posts from you and hope your next Silver is that Barber. Trapper
