"Treasure Hunting? You're Kidding!"

You never say that! You say, "I found 27 coins today!" And stop right there.

Yeah, that's how I do it. I drove 2 hours to my sisters house to MD and visit and found 13 coins not 35 cents. I didn't help though that she said she had found a gold ring in the back yard years before.

I used to get trouble until I found my first gold ring. Now she asks me when I am going again. :p

To my friends who don't get it I just refer to myself as the Creepy Metal Detector Guy and BottleCap DirtFisherman.

They can bite me.

Most of my neighbors think I'm a little weird. And I am.:yes::lol:

Thanks Dan. That was my point exactly.

But like most hunters I have yet to score the trophy buck I am dreaming about. That is what keeps me going!

Wait till you score your first gold!!! Then you will dream (literally) about MDing!!!!

This one isn't 9 feet tall, only about 8, I'd estimate, and I didn't make it, but that's me standing next to it.

I just show my wife the pics of all the gold rings you guys found and the checks you got from selling them.

The skeptics in my life are few. Most are amazed at what I have found in 40 years of detecting. Some naysayers just want to be negative and would still make fun of the hobby even if you found the mother of all diamond rings or a 1913 Liberty nickel!
As far as my wife goes, I proposed to her on a "treasure hunt" so she knew what she was getting into. ;) HH!

I get a kick out of the questions" ever find anything good?" I just point to my wife's finger, Cartier 18k, they get quiet after that....

It seems like a balance between showing enough finds to put an end to snide comments....
Though not showing so much that people think we are only in it for monetary gains....
I was at my friend's house showing him how my detector worked. The neighbor, (who is an acquaintance of my family's) Yelled over..." what are you trying to find, a dime?"
I replied "Yes, hopefully one Pre 1964!"
He walked over and told me he used to detect in the 70's and 80's, when he lived in CT. and loved it. Then he asked if I had any good finds. we discussed local history and how the community has changed. I could see he realized I was an... enthusiast:lol:
Without me even hinting or asking, he offered me permission to hunt 3 different properties he owns!:D 2 houses built 1906, as well as an 1800's stone church he converted to a home!!
A very nice man!

Very rarely will anyone say anything bad about me detecting, most people are pretty interested in it and want to tag along. I grew up in the inner city and use to carry my detector on my bike when I was a kid and ride up to the nicer area's where they had grass to detect but none of the kid's on the corners ever messed with me or said anything bad, I knew most of them but looking back im surprised they didn't tease me about it. The only ones that really seem to have issues with us are the archeologist.
