Tracker IV settings

I keep reading that I'm missing the gold when I use discrimination, like all noobs, I was skeptical. I've waved my wedding ring over the coil at my normal settings and it pings.

Today I did a test. I have two smaller rings, one is a men's wedding band, but is smaller; pinky size for me. Another is that same size but thinner gold and oddly shaped. They're both 14k. I burried them about 4" down and tried my normal settings. The wedding band was invisible. The odd band was so weak and broken that I'd have sworn it was trash.

I was using "tone" mode, TIV's Jewelry mode, with the notch at 12:00. In disc /coin mode it they were both invisible with the disc at 12:00. I had to pull the disc back to 9:00 to get a solid hit in disc mode.

Both rings are the same size and both 14k, but one is thinner and has an irregular shape. They both sound different and are both invisible with moderate discrimination.

Believe the hype. Discrimination will lose you the gold. Sometimes it's worth it if the trash is overwealming. I'll be tuning down the discrimination though.

You can't help but smile when you compare prices of BH coils and other company's coils. The Tracker is really impressive, if they could somehow make that meter work for depth to target....really cool.

I read somewhere recently that the Whites XLT was the best selling detector of all time, I find that hard to believe when you consider the price and functionality of the Tracker IV. No proof to back that statement up. My suspicions would lean towards the BH line to be some of the best selling of all time.

I have heard that the 4" coil lacks on smaller targets, the 10" coil does a nice job on open areas. Try to get the 7" closed coil it is deadly in trashy areas.

As for you comment about keeping the disc low, there is a lot of wisdom in that. This week while hunting a park that we hit about 3 times a year, we noticed that someone had really hit it hard with zincs notched out. I landed a monster gold/diamond ring that sounded off right in the zinc range. I am much more worried about digging 10 deep holes than probing out 10, shallowish zincs when coin shooting.

With the rings buried set your tone ID to where the tones are fighting or mixed over the target and try hunting that way. My buddy has his set there permanently now. Some tabs can sound like a ring but the AM mode usually tells him that it is aluminum and there is usually a deeper grunt in tone mode if it is a piece of wet iron or bottle cap.

Does anyone out there have any experience with these? I'm considering a new coil and don't know if I should go bigger for greater depth or smaller for greater accuracy. I do seem to hunt a lot of trashy areas.

If I go for the smaller coil, what about the 4" and 7" coils?

I have the stock 8" coil. Is there that much of a difference in the 7" coil on the bounty hunters? Is the 4" coil weak?

I use the 10" coil. I like it because I can cover more ground and the depth is a bit better. Took me a bit to adjust to pinpointing from the 8" coil. I don't hunt many trashy areas (one reason I tend to like school yards so much) so the 10" coils works great for me.

4 inch coil is good with the tracker ive done good with it in trash and it works well under bleachers in parks and football fields. i paid 30 for mine on ebay its now paid me back
