This Maine island is settling into its usual winter weather and the ground is frozen about 6" to 9" deep in most locations -- too hard for digging. Went out a couple weeks ago along a south-facing shoreline hoping that the freeze there wasn't as deep as elsewhere on the island. I found this "Winner" about 6" down in the thawed soil just above the high tide line!
Yes, it is a real "Winner"; a brass plaque (approx. 3" x 5") from a 1942 vintage life raft, manufactured by the "Winner Mfg. Co. of Trenton, NJ. If it could only tell its story... I suspect it was sold as surplus to someone on the island and was somehow used, perhaps as a floating platform by the local lobstermen.
I've attached an image of the original plaque, one that I annotated so the information stamped on it easily seen. I've also posted an image of the type of raft that I believe it once was attached.
Happy Hunting,
