The Official Whites MXT Information Thread

Thanks RIP, I need this cause my MXT just came in and I feel like a one legged man in a butt kickin contest. All this deep whisper stuff fine and good but mostly I hear the scream of countless pull tabs and aluminum cans shredded by lawnmowers. This compounded by foil, spark plugs, zillions of nails and thrown away keys.

Enough of that as everyone has to deal with it. I'm mostly a old house/park/school/churchyard hunter. I have the stock coil and have enough change to get another. What would you get first? The 4x6 mini DD or the 6x10 dd? At this point I think covering ground is more important than trying to get close to a chainlink fence or bleachers. And would you get Whites or Excellerator coils?

I like the 6X10DD coil, myself. Never take it off the machine. The stock coil has been sitting in the corner since I bought the DD.

I agree Snowy. The 6x10DD is a great coil on the MXT. I also really liked the D2 10" coil. As a matter of fact it's the only time the D2 coil seemed to shine for me.

Agreed, the Eclipse 6x10 DD is an exceptional coil and one I use extensively.

I find that the White’s Eclipse Shoot DD 4x6, White’s Eclipse 6x10 DD and the EXcelerator or White’s R2 10” DD Coil perform the best on my White’s MXT and M-6 Detectors. I sometimes use the White’s Eclipse 950 (stock coil) only because I have it. It came with the detectors but if I had my way I would have order the 6x10” DD and the 10” DD with the detectors then would have bought the 4x6 DD as an accessory coil and had the money from the Eclipse 950 go toward my purchase.

For some relic hunting and sometimes on the beach I use the EXcelerator 10x12 SEF (Butterfly) Coil. It goes a little deeper then the EXcelerator 10” DD (no big deal), and has same ground coverage. However, the EXcelerator 10x12 SEF is heavier and not a good choice to swing all day. And you need open, flat and even ground to use it properly such as on even dirt, sand or short well managed grass/lawns.

Remember, though... pinpointing with the eclipse DD coils is a little different than the stock... I don't know about the 10" ....

Perhaps someone here could reiterate pinpointing with such coils. Some of you here know it much better than myself.

With the EXcelerator 10" DD, it pinpoints just forward of the mounting ears on the coil. When using the White's 10" R2 DD (my friend's coil) I find that it pinpoints just behind dead center.

Jack,

You guys are right on in regards to the White's Eclipse 6x10" DD. In my opinion the White’s Eclipse Shooter DD 4x6 and the White’s Eclipse 6x10” DD are the most useful coil available for the V3, MXT, DFX and M-6 detectors. I pretty much consider the 6x10” DD as my standard coil and I use the 4x6” DD for hunting in the high-trash areas and confined spaces.

These two coils can take care of most hunting. However, I like the EXcelerator 10” DD for “Deep Silver” hunting as well as relic hunting and the 10x12 SEF for relic hunting and some “Deep Silver” hunting.

I do have a question for you if you don’t mind. I’ve been fooling around with my buddies V3 and may be adding this detector to my arsenal. I hunted with the V3 with the stock R2 coil and it did a pretty good job. But for some strange reason the White’s R2 seems to do better on the MXT, DFX and M-6 detectors. And I found that the EXcelerator 10” DD, 10x12 SEF, 6x10” DD and 4x6” DD coils all do really well on the V3. This has me a bit puzzled being that the R2 does so well on the other detectors. I guess what I mean is that the R2 does not seem to be the best choice for the V3 detector even though it performs great on the other White's Detectors.

My friend agrees with my findings and is now using the EXcelerator in place of the R2. It seems that we don’t get the depth when using the R2 on the V3that we get when using it on the MXT, DFX and the M-6 detector. We found this the case when using the V3 in the coin, coin & jewelry or deep silver modes. We did however get good results with the R2 on the V3 when using the relic mode, but still got slightly better results with the other coils.

One of the guys we hunt with down in Virginia has the same complaints regard the R2 on his V3.

Have you been happy with the performance of the R2 on your V3 and have you tired the other coils and got better results? And do you have any tips and would any custom settings to make the R2 perform better on the V3?

Best Regards,
Silver Hawk

No you wouldn't have John, depending on your discrimination setting. C&J is also a mixed mode and the all-metal mode whispers will be heard, as long as
you don't discriminate out the gold.

I don't like the standard (center trigger) relic mode myself, because of all the sounds it makes, but I never miss the small gold jewelry in C&J because I set the discrimination down to not block out anything above iron. When hunting in areas where jewelry is a likely find, I run my MXT in C&J with discrimination around #2 on the dial.

"but I never miss the small gold jewelry in C&J "

Not to be a wise crack BUT IF you do not find it, how would you know you NEVER missed it? I hunt exclusively in Relic mode w/trigger forward and ZERO discrimination. Yep, a lot of useless digging and still I would be very hesitant to say "I never miss targets!"...Be well......... Jan

sounds like you been listening to John again!!:D:p:lol::lol:

Well Janster, its kind of hard to prove the unprovable, but I feel pretty comfortable having found this little chain fragment.

As you probably know, gold chains are pretty hard to detect if they have no medal attached. The clasp is probably the biggest contributor to the signal and this clasp was tiny.

Thanks to all for the information on this thread. I was able to use my MXT300 today for the first time at a nearby park. Found 1 penny (newer and still need to clean to read the date) and one State quarter (Washington State).

After reading the thread, I believe I will search in the 'relic mode'. Although, in the coin mode the detector still goes into the all metal mode when the target is deep? Is this correct? Most of my time was spent digging out an old Coors beer can at about 10 inches!!

Still need to do a lot more reading and getting used to the MXT but so far seems to work great. The majority of the park was in use by high schoolers so had to work the outer edges.....What great treasures must be waiting where I couldn't get to today!!!

Thanks again for all the info.

Glad you found the information on this thread useful. Yes, as you surmised, both Relic and C&J use Mixed Mode, as a matter of fact, the threshold sound you hear in your earphones is the DC or all metal channel.

You'll be digging crushed soda cans that VDI as quarters until you can distinguish the differences in the sound, and or learn how to "size" the target when you are pin pointing it.

For understanding the sound differences you might want to read this.

Rudy, would it be ok to bump your "read this" thread up where we can all read it again? Very informitive.
