Sting rays hurt like hell

I know the pain, happened not so long ago not once but twice, i ws surf fishing had the booties on, was dragging the feet as i was tought and bam i got slinged by the pain so i crawl back to my truck wich was parked in the sand close to where i was fishing the stinger riped of the ray and was inbeded in my foot so i grave it and jank it out of there, the pain was severe my friend, take thoe bootie of and blood filled i dump it, piss on it to see if the pain would subside, regroup and decide to go back out and keep on fishing, what are the odds of getting struck a second time in the same day, well not 5 mins in i get struck again, like a bolt of lightning wham i fall over this time the pain was more intense, again i could see the stinger in the bootie, this time i was literaly crying, screaming like a baby, crawld back to my truck repeating the process and called it a day, still have the stingers as a souvenier and to remember what scrutiating pain is. Yesterday i could swear one caught the corner o my eye, but said to myself naaa water still to cold, but in the end no pain no gain!

Oh that sucks. I've stepped on about 50 of them and it scares me every time.

I try to move slow and use my coil to scare them off. Sometimes I sweep high and miss them and end up stepping on them.

I've heard peeing on the wound helps but any acid would probably work (vinegar, soda, lemon juice, etc)
Lots of them here too. I have stepped on them, been lucky so far.

Never pee, rub sand or other home remedies on the wound. Call 911 and ask for the fire department to bring hot water. Those EMT's know exactly what to do and have the trucks to get onto the beach. They will drive right up to you, don't walk a distance to the parking lot, that is not normally necessary, at least around here. They will soak your foot in hot water until the pain goes away then treat the wound to help prevent infection.

I am guessing any beaches that have stingrays get many calls for help. Their fire departments know what to do too.

That's nasty, but it sounds like you got lucky, could have been way worse. I once stood on an electric ray, that was quite an experience anyway thank god it wasn't a stingray that I stood on.

Hows it looking today, LT? Just a minor flesh wound or did it go bad on you? We dont have anything bitey or stingy up here thank God...Hope it heals up with no problems for you..
Mud

Has a prominent puncture wound but the toxin and pain is gone. Tender and I hope no infection occurs. My boot saved me. I'm now in the market for a thicker boot. Something like an oyster/urchin boot . Prob is they all use types of metal for the lacing hooks..that or they are in the 200.00 range.

I saw a ray swim off in front of me when I was down your way a couple weeks ago. If it was a sting ray I was lucky not to get hit. Thanks for posting this- you may help someone else avoid going through the same ordeal.

Sharks, gators, rays oh my. I know I am sticking to freshwater. Feel for you man hang in there. You paid your dues with one.

gonna be buying some of these for when I hunt certain beach terrains. The area that I was hit is known to have large numbers of small sized rays. Not the Steve Erwin types. These are about the size of of a large frying pan. Still enough to ruin your day and if the barb gets embedded, your screwed. http://www.austinkayak.com/products/5449/ForEverlast-Ray-Guard-Reef-Boots.html
The boots I have, I thought were plenty for human items like sharp objects, iron nails, stuff like that. I never really thought about rays, or rockfish, etc...

Glad to hear the pain is gone, but you really should get some antibiotics going in you just to make sure. It's not just the stingray barb that could have been nasty but everything else in the water as well, fish poo etc...
Foot nice and swollen today?
I like those boots you showed a pic of, i was thinking the EXACT same ones. Yup, normal dive booties don't even slow down the barb, it goes straight through them like butter...

surprisingly no swelling or redness of any kind. Entry point is visible but it doesn't hurt today at all. As for the boots, I just ordered them. 45 bucks free shipping,.. I have read that the sizing runs large so if your a 10 buy a 9 etc. I always use socks inside of my water boots and tend to get a size larger for the swelling of the cotton but after many reviews these do seem to run large.

I couldn't even begin to count how many I have stepped on, but I have never been hit,,,,,,,my feet are mentally trained to immediately pull it up when I feel one,,,,,Z is absolutely right in the treatment,,,, hope its your last one,,,,,GL HH

its the heat that breaks down the protean that causes so much pain. The hotter the better, just dont use boiling water. Do as other have said get some antibiotics. If the stinger got you from the top you are lucky. I had one hit me a few years back. It was the worst pain I ever had. Just missed my achilles.Went in one side and out the other. put me on crutches. Had to see three doctors to get straight. These hits are serious. Take care of it.

Is that drain hole on the side of the boot something to worry about? Looks close to where he got hit... How are they out of water like in wet/dry sand? Some days I go knee deep, others just ankle. I always wondered what I brushed against bodysurfing 40 years ago - sure glad I didnt find out the hard way. My dad got hit on a trip in Baja - he never went in the water again.

Yeah I know.. It does have a drain hole. My luck it'll pull a bullseye next time right in the middle of it. Still, 1000x better than wetsuit booties. Those are a false sense of security and only keep your feet warm.

The day I got hit I dealt with the pain, then went to work about 7 hrs later. Worked through the night and came home no problem. Woke up pretty from my slumber (about 30 hrs after the sting) and I had THE WORST headache and body aches. I had to take the night off work. It seems to of been a severe sinus headache but I've never had one that bad. My gf took care of me but I was throwing up from the headache and shivering. A small part of me thinks maybe it was toxin?

The things we do for a some jewelry . I'd probably make more profit collecting cans.
