Sorting out some chains

Finding chains can be a problem. The way I understand it is a detector tends to see a single link. That is fine for most bigger chains, but with all the pendents I found, I knew there had to be a lot of small thin chains not being found. A lot of testing showed me that most will read in the iron zone, but just slightly differently. For example. On my Deus, a 04 is going to be a bobby pin, paper clip 90% of the time. If one or two swings get me anything else, like a 05, then it will be something else. That is where I find a lot of chains. And not just cheap iron ones, but small gold ones as well. I've amassed a fair collection over the years and have been sorting out stuff I had in zip bags for years. Here is what I've sorted out. I've sold most all the gold and many silver ones over the years to pay for new detectors so most of this is costume. I have a few bags to go. One of the bags to the right is all crosses, many with chains, and the other is full of more fine chains I have yet to sort. The problem now is how do I store these to keep them from twisting together.

On the Legend I was told chains come up scratchy and junk sounding. Didn't know what that meant till I found one and it was exactly like they said. I almost passed on my first chain, now I have 4 so far all sounding that same scratchy junk tone.

It is the same with those cheap 25 cent rings. I know a lot of people don't bother with them, but I call a ring a ring. Those cheap ones sound like a paperclip, but on my Deus, they read up to 05-06 instead of staying at 04 like a paperclip.

I can think of a few hunt location scenarios where it might pay to angle for tinsel thin gold chains. Like sand box tot-lots, or eroded beaches (where lighter weight aluminum is washed out). But for most all hunt locations it would be a recipe for insanity, wouldn't it ? Like for the average junky blighted park turf, if someone went trying to be a hero and digging that insane small whisper stuff, he'd be driven bonkers with tteeeennnyyy little foil turds, eh ?

So true.

I only go for the tiny stuff in tot lots, and only then because I have cleaned them out over the years so that anything that grunts I want to know what it is.

I often challenge myself to guess what I'm about to recover. As I said, the Deus makes it easy, for shallow targets of course, Any 04 is going to be a paperclip or bobby pin. Any time I get a few 05s or 06s with the 04s I know it is not a paperclip or bobbypin. More often than not it will be a chain or iron ring. And sometimes it is a gold chain. Sure, tinsel thin, but like my rings, jewelry is jewelry.

So true...

So here's a funny story to illustrate : When the Nox 800 first came out, I had one of the original limited # that got off the assembly line. They were in such high demand, that a person could "flip" a brand new one, and make a profit. Since the waiting list was so long at the time.

And at the time I got that, I had only ever had standard coin/relic machines before that. Never had a machine capable of prospecting & pinhead sized stuff. It was just never a venue that interested me. But when I got this Nox 800, I realized that it was capable of finding tinsel thin chains, earring studs, etc... So my mind immediately thought of a particular millionaires beach near me, where a certain zone had given up 100s of silver coins over the years. Several of us that stripped it clean of the deep silver, and no one was "being a hero" and digging super small foil there.

I rationalized that : *Surely* we must be missing those tinsel thin chains and earring studs that the millionaires bring to the beach. So I took the 800 there, fiddled with the controls for awhile, and ..... yes ...... got to the settings that were allowing me to find the most insanely small foil turds with ease !! You know, like when you open a wine or champagne bottle that has those foil covered top neck parts, how a teeny bit of foil gets under your finger nail for instance. And all sort of other pinhead little non-descript specks.

I was gleeful that "diamond earring studs" and "tinsel thin gold chains" would soon over flow my apron. Woohoo !

But after 2 hrs. of this, and 100 foil turds later , I began to rethink the strategy. Wondering : Gee, EVEN WHEN I DO *eventually* get a tinsel thin chain, it is STILL going to take 50 of them, to equal the weight of a single fatty man's gold band. HHhhmmm. :ehh: So maybe I'm better off passing these flitty whispers after all ?

That was my first and last attempt at Micro-jewelry. Not for me . Doh !

Just look at some of the stuff you're missing LOL.........

Are you trying to hint that there could be bigger diamonds or precious stones in micro-jewelry settings ? Like a diamond in an earring stud, for example ?

If so, I'll bet that if you went to any big city highly stocked jewelry store, and studied all their diamond stud earings, that you'd be very hard-pressed to find ANY that ever exceeded chip (or quarter carat diamond or whatever). Contrast to rings, and you will find no shortage of them with big stones.

Or was I misunderstanding your post & pix ??

Not at all Tom. I was just making fun of the tiny stuff I found. For most people, those little pieces will never amount to the trouble of bending over and picking them up. I just happen to like finding stuff lost by others. Not so much the junk they toss, like foil and bottle caps, but stuff lost. That is why I say a ring is a ring, or a piece of jewelry is a piece of jewelry to me. I found the lost.

On a side note: I have found it interesting that while my Deus in 40 kHz can quite easily hit and make even the smallest sequins sound good, my pinpointer can't hit a lot of them at all.
