Citizens arrest??? Only one who should be place under a REAL arrest is the coach for harassment. It is one thing to get pissed on the field, but to follow you, that wouldn't have shone in her favor if she had called the police. Heck, you could have called the police and gotten her spoken to with that attitude.

First citizens arrest is a REAL thing and if someone tries to use that power they better know what they are doing and if what they think they are doing is safe!!! But you are right as if she called the police and a officer came out that was tired of her being a busy body then she may be ticketed or arrested for harassment or disorderly conduct.

Crazy coach

I would have called 911 on her, a crazy threatening lady confronting you while you were minding your own. I bet that would have gone over well with the school board..

Hey guys, I am so sick and tired of reading post about people getting harassed and putting up with it. You people are not doing nothing positive for our hobby! This "better to just move on" attitude has got to stop unless you guys feel you are doing something wrong by metal detecting? I am a tax payer that enjoys a good clean hobby and I spend money in my community when I am enjoying my hobby(gas, lunch etc.) and I will not be harassed for having good clean fun! If a person is out fishing or hunting they have the right not to be harassed and so do we. If I have to duck and hide in the shadows then I might as well start commiting crimes instead of being a detectorist. Please start standing up for yourselves and our hobby.

The parks and fields are for everyone.

If it is allowed, there is no reason for this. Not only would I have called the police for her threat of arrest, I would have made sure the policeman that showed up knew that. Also a quick call to the park supervisor explaining the verbal assault while on the field may a well placed phone call to the school or who every crazy lady worked for. Your gonna meet all kinds of weirdo's, let the cops handle it. Worst case here, the park supervisor ask you to leave and not dig there anymore, no different than a crazy lady running you off. If you carry a camera/phone like most of us, you should video her behavior for you tube so we all can watch and comment. Im a home owner, I pay a lot of taxes for schools and such and I dont have any kids..........You can bet I would have made a few complaints of my own. There would be a welcome mat at the entrance next time I visited, or chain and lock. But you are absolutely right, there is plenty of other places to hunt. Maybe you can get like 50 md'rs to do surface scans, screwdriver only no diggers. Show up for practice, lol.

Great words for your 100th post!!

I agree 100%

Folks can get arrested for harassing hunters and fisherman...

It is usually best to leave before somebody actuall does call the cops. They may end up siding with the complainer , they do sometimes. While some may think it hurts detectorists and appears to be admitting guilt , the negative attention drawn to our hobby when the law shows up can be much worse , even if they side with you sometimes just the fact the law was involved it can make us all look bad in the eyes if the public. I fully believe leaving is the best thing to do in most situations when that happens. Have too many people call the law on ya and it just might BECOME illegal to detect there , if too many people protest what you are doing it WILL become illegal. The best attention we can get is no attention at all. Once you draw negative attention you just make it worse by being beligerant and arguementative. Im not saying let these folks steamroll you but its better to leave than to have a group of " concerned citizens " to petition the board for a rule banning metal detecting , which is their next step. Common sense folks , dont push your luck or you may lose it. You can go back there when there is nobody around to object.

Well I would of told her in a gentleman way to go mind her business. If she would continue her pissyfit then I would have to show her my REDNECK side. Either way would not leave nor would I have backed down. I guess I'am going against the grain here but I a firm believer in that folks need to mind there own dang business.

I disagree. Stay there and detect (not on the playing field though if they came to use it) . Be calm and call police. In the end it wont be like that stupid person won and lives to tell others negitive stuff about us.. but instead someone above her putting her in her place wether it be police or school board. Like other post above mentions, its a public place and I pay taxes.

agreed ! :clapping:

I'm a pretty laid back guy but if things really went down the way you described, I would have probably called the cops on that tard.

I'm getting the feeling that I was in the wrong to walk away.

I was only practicing what my parents taught me in case of prolonged conflict.

I became the bigger man, and walked away, there was no point in dragging this out.

And that Soccer team (and Coach) were wearing different colored AYSO uniforms than the ones the local team wears. I'm guessing they are from another city or county, I probably won't see them again.

I have never encountered this, county parks at least give me some form of written permission around Pa, the public parks however have no written permission just tell you to fill in your holes. I wouldn't be worried about getting arrested but I would have probably have just moved locations till they left - if she would have followed me I would have called the police on her for harassment, she certainly doesn't own the park that she is trying to kick you out of.

The only thing that could get you in trouble is if you are leaving messy holes.

Keep your holes neat and deep, fill them in and stomp them clean, Fluff the grass with your boot a bit and no one will be pulling them out or tripping on them or for that matter know the holes are there.

Don't get bullied just be kind have the proper permission's wherever you detect. I can not stress enough digging proper clean plugs as this hurts everyone when we do not and someone reports it.

And lastly always carry some sharp can-slaw or rusty nails/bolts with you for people like them. Ask the coach if she would rather her players fall on the sharp tetanus infested items. WE are better patrons to parks as we at least pick up garbage! maintenance guys run over soda cans left and right, I see it all the time!

Last park I went to found needles in the sand volley ball lot. People just do not know what we do other than look for our treasures, find lots of trash along the way.

Well I say she had a big pair on her and you should have kicked her right in them!

Seriously, I would have stayed right in her face and begged her to call 911, once the police came and she explained how tore up the kiddies field was and as she walks over to show the police, how nice of a laugh you'd have because she would not be able to find any spots of danger.......

I try to be nice first, but if I am doing as we all are supposed, filling in holes and leave no trace, then it is on! Call who you want, I will wait (Detecting of course) and let them go nuts.

I say it is the evil soccer mom curse from driving soccer vans, a devilish evil combination for sure.....

Just my thoughts.....

Jim

I respect your decision because it was the right decision for YOU! Unforunately, the bully got her way and her resolve and personal beliefs have been reinforced...AND YOU WERE DOING NOTHING WRONG!

I carry a pocket video and even have a auto dash cam for use in these type of life situations. A key factor in this 'conflict' is that SHE APPROACHED YOU! Not the other way around. She could have called the police first if she really thought you were doing something unlawful. She didn't, and instead she chose to be an intimidating BULLY and probably did something illegal while bullying you (citizen's arrest threat).

Many on this forum agree that you did the right thing to diffuse the situation by walking away..."being the bigger man". It's just not what would have happened if the bully approached me. Guess that would make me 'the littleler man'() Oh, one more thought...sometimes the BULLY is a PUBLIC OFFICIAL, and they really don't like the documentation of a video.

You know that you weren't in the wrong, so why didn't you just call the police and tell them that this crazy lady was threatening you and once they arrested her that she would be the example for her team that she acted like a complete A$$hole...

Also you can tell the police that she was bullying you, most states are taking that crime seriously. She is the JOCK sports coach and you are the NERD metal detectorist, and thats the way school bullying usually starts.

That's not what several posters here have said, though I understand their point of view of not turning tail and backing off like a coward...

It's just not in my nature to make a big deal out of something like this. Of course, I am prepared (and more than capable of) to defend myself in case such contact escalates to physical violence, however I am glad it didn't come to that.

Plus, I have plenty of other parks and fields in my town to choose from, a couple of which I haven't gotten around to hunting yet! This one just happened to be one I haven't hunted on in a while, so I figured there would be plenty of stuff to fish out, especially on the soccer field. Most likely a case of "Wrong Place, Wrong Time".

I'll walk it off and move on.

This is California, the cops around here are far more likely to side with her <<<political diatribe removed by Admin>>>. That was one reason I decided not to call the police and simply let this one go. Even if I had a 100% chance of winning my case in Court, it simply wouldn't be worth all the trouble and time I have to spend on it when that time is much better spent MD'ing.

As I said in a previous post, they were wearing AYSO uniforms different in color to the ones the local team usually wears, so they were probably from out of town. Making this (probably) a "one time" thing.
