Scraping other metals...

My father was a partner in a junk yard so i learnt young about the value of 'junk' and the best places to sell it.

We made ingots from lead, 12"x4"x3", i collected the old license plates from cars (aluminum), copper pipes and copper wire.

I would take in a plastic shopping bag of copper in the 80's and get $30, a coal sack of aluminum and get mote then $100 and lead from a roof for more then $200.

If your relying on md scrape your not going to get rich but in the woods you might find junk that does have a value when added up.

I know the dumpster transfer station my old boss had would produce some scrap...we'd fill a dumpster up within two weeks and get maybe $200 but the ally and lead and brass and copper would make three times that (one guy worked for him for nothing but that junk).

I'm sure some make some money from junk lead and brass and copper but its not going to be much unless you know somewhere where you can dig up copper coins the size of tin can lids everywhere and fishing weights will add up if your a beach detectorist but you wont see anyone doing the gold dance cos they found another weight

I recycle aluminum, plastic, glass, and any thing else that is worth money recycled. Of course, in CA I never make any money off of the drink containers seeing as I have to pay a CRV.

Anyone know how to actually get the CRV refunded? I get paid by the pound, not refunded the 10 cents. Is it possible to get the CRV back in CA???

I watched a thing on the news a while back addressing that very subject.
Not too many people know this but according to state law, recyclers are required to give at least the crv value of what ever it is your turning in.
They don't like to mess with it because anything less than a pound they have to pull somebody of the line to count whatever you have, they'll tell you you usually get more by the pound.
For example, it takes somewhere around 25 to 30 cans to make a pound. At 5 cents a can that comes out to 1.50 for 30 cans or a pound.
Last time I turned something in,
aluminum cans were paying 2.10 a pound

I used to hit up one of the popular tire stores for their wheel weights. I reload and make my own cast bullets. I hoarded enough lead WW to last me a lifetime but kept collecting since tire shops went to zinc now instead of lead. I have 4200 lbs @ almost a 1.00 a pound now sitting in 3 55 gallon drums in my barn. One of these days I will smelt it and take it in

I recycle everything! I am just that way about throwing things in the trash, I don't like to do it. A little extra effort and you can recycling things to get a few extra $$ and reduce the amount of waste a person creates. I am not a environmental nut, but I'm a little OCD when it comes to recycling. All of my scrap metal from last year added up to about $80.00. That's lead, copper, brass, iron, aluminum, you name it. It's also part of the challenge to see how much scrap I can turn in each year.

When i worked in england cutting stone with a big circular saw, it had tungston diamond bits on the tips and when it would wear down and id have the guy come in and replace it, id keep the leftover tips...it wasnt much but it added up when your killing a set of tips inside 4 months.

Doing Plumbing the boss used to take our turned in scrap Plumbing parts and take us on a deep sea fishing trip once a year. Then he got greedy:lol: I've cashed in about $50,000 in copper and brass since then with a friend.Figure he was the biggest Plumbing company down this way and multiply that times 75 crews. Now you see why they get greedy!:laughing:I found just two pieces of brass on the beach and got $75.Save me your unwanted brass, copper, and lead!
