Scammed?

Good Luck buddy.

Maybe you can buy a 15 $ centech from harbor freight. i bought one for a buddy's birthday. IT SUCKS compared to the other PP I have used. but he uses it and swears it better then going without.

In the mean time just set your coil next to the hole and grab a hand full of soil then wave it across the coil, and if it beeps then the target is in your hand. Easier than having to keep walking over to your friend to borrow the pp. Good luck with getting it back.

If you do this, be sure to take your rings off first...lol I learned this lesson after about 30 min digging in a hole once and every scoop beeped...lol

Oh that makes it easy

He lives on a Military Base and I do not think I can get in the gates :p

pfffft, that makes it really easy.

Call the base, explain that you are about to file a report with the provost marshall's office. Tell them that you would like to speak to this soldier's commanding officer. Explain to the C/O exactly what happened and that you intend to report the theft to the provost marshall's office but would like to give him a chance to return the item.

Chances are you will get a very fast, apologetic and courteous response from that soldier.

I know this from experience.

Chad

ps - This really is pulling out the big guns and aiming them at the privates. Use it sparingly. It will most likely get the soldier some type of punishment that you will not hear about.

It is most unfortunate that this has happened but sometimes things happena nd you can't ley it ruin your enjoyment of the hobby. As has been mentioned you could get one from Harbor freight OR go old school and not use one. I know a PP is a huge help but they were MD'ing without them before.

The scoop method works too. At least until you can get one back one way or another.

As for reporting the person to his cammanding officer you may want to advise the person that your feeling duped and would hate to have to take such extreme measures when all you want it whats yours back. Sometimes a little strong diplomacy works wonders and you saved the ammunition for a bigger battle.

Just my 2 buried cents.

Happy Hunting

:D

Even so, you're not really out anything

On one hand, you had a pinpointer that for all intents and purposes was useless, and worth nothing. Assuming the guy was legit, you'll get a fixed pinpointer back. Maybe a year later than you would have liked, but you'll have a working pinpointer. Assuming the guy wasn't legit, the worst thing you'll be out is a pinpointer that didn't work anyway. It's not like you gave the guy fifty bucks to fix it or anything.

Just buy a new one. If the guy does come thru and sends you a working pinpointer sometime this summer, you've got a backup for when the new one eventually fritzes out (and they all do).

Lemons, lemonade.

It worked, I just couldnt hit it against anything (Not hard) I could still use it, I just had to be careful

Did that person have his own pinpointer? And if he did was it a cheap one? It sounds like he took your pinpointer. To many storys he already told you.

I've been in both situations: The one where I was scammed and the one were I thought I was being scammed, but the person really did go through all the troubles he was telling me, and I did eventually get my items/money. (My side job is repairing home computers.)

Do try and get in touch with the son, let him know that you don't want to cause him trouble, but that his father has caused you trouble (at least some worry). Also, kindly, let him know you now know how to use the chain of command (ymmv, this may appear as a threat).

As a a former Air Force person with 20 years service, I'd like to add that the last straw should be to involve this young mans chain of command. For all intense purposes, he may not even no what his fathers up to (if hes up to anything) and involving this kids superiors will only cause him trouble that he may not even deserve. I know how the Army works as I have numerous friends and family in the Army and it would really suck if he had a gung ho
1st sergeant (or whatever they're called in the Army) with a shoot first and ask questions later mentality. We had those in the AF (still do) and I'm sure they're in the Army as well, probably more so.

Just contact the young man and explain whats going on and if he gives you any trouble at that point then tell him since his father resides on a military installation that you'll have no choice at that point but to take this matter to his chain of command. At that point, I'm sure your situation will be resolved. But I would give the young man a chance to clear the situation up first. Jusy my humble opinion on the matter.

I don't blame you for being upset withhim.I just can't understand why you can't hunt without a pinpointer.Yes,it will take longer to find your target but its not an impossible feat and its better than not hunting at all.

I agree with Searcher Sully don't cause this young man to get marks on his service jacket for something his father did.Just contact the young man and inform him of what you believe his father is up to and see if he can get your stuff back.If he gets mouthy then let him know you intend to notify his CO and I'm sure he will work with you.Good Luck,Ken

To clear a few things up:

I'll preface this with the fact that I'm not an attorney, but a military leader (previous CO) that often must/has dealt with similar issues in my 18+ years of continuing service. Any opinion expressed here is just that, my opinion.

1. No CO is going to hold a military member accountable for the actions of anybody other than the member unless the act occurs on base/post and the offender is a minor. In this case, the event took place off base by a non-military member, which makes it a civil matter, and no CO will touch it. If the act happens on base/post and the offender is a civilian being hosted by a military member, then offender could face military and civil charges....the military member will usually face only military reprimand and monetary fines for any damages to government property.

2. If you have the individuals name and decide to inquire with the base on getting your belongings back, I would highly suggest you file a civilian police report, but more importantly, a military police report. This will force military law enforcement to investigate the issue on base and is the best way to secure your stolen goods.

3. I would highly discourage any military member not associated with the circumstance from engaging using military sources (Global, etc.). You could quickly find yourself in more hot water than the offender and (possibly) even a civil lawsuit.

On a fellow MD'ers note...I sure hope you get your gear back and that the guy responsible is held accountable for his actions.

Good luck with the situation. I'd say find a way to get another pinpointer, temporarily, and catch up with the guy.

Well if the thing was busted....

Anyhow bet he sold it for money to someone on base--if he really lives there.
