Rutus alter 71 and concentric coil

Thanks partly to the excellent detailed reviews written by TNSS, I've sourced and am also using a Rutus Alter 71 here in foothills of NC.

I'm a long time coin hunter. Other past and present detectors include various Whites, Garretts, Minelab among other several other brand machines.

I find using this detector and the concentric coil for coin hunting nothing short of oustanding. It is simply one of the best, if not the best I've ever used. Great separation and even better ID characteristics have meant more coins/hour average than any other detector I've owned over the past 30 years.

Welcome to the forum.
Have you used 11" dd coil?

Congratulations on your new Rutus! I hope you enjoy it as much I do mine. It's easy to use, but there is a lot to learn. I'm still working out how to dial it in depending on the conditions I'm facing. But learning is part of the fun.

I've used the 11" DD almost exclusively. I need to spend more time with the concentric.

I've also used the 11" DD with the Rutus and find it to be a touch heavier. I think the larger coil will produce deeper finds and I use it mostly in older sites that are not too cluttered with trash. I agree with TNSS it's runs a little chattier than the concentric coil. Each has their advantages. I use the concentric 80% of time due to the type areas I hunt and it being quieter and lighter. Regardless of the coil I am very impressed with this machine.

Used the Rutus with 11" DD coil exclusively this past weekend.

We hunted a modern area (school) for about 2 hours on Saturday, and I came away with 32 clad coins, including 18 quarters. The Rutus settings were primarily coin mode, 5.2khz, custom sound profile, reaction of 4, and mask of 2.

Compared to the concentric coil, the 11" DD of course covers more area and is deeper. However, it is heavier and tends to be quite abit noisier. I did dig one rusted bottle cap that sounded good and the graph seemed mostly in the good target area. I also dug two flatten aluminum caps that read/sounded good. I did note the sound of these were a little stronger than usual coin. For the most part, the concentric coil better eliminates this type of trash.

On Sunday, went for an hour or so to one of my local pounded sites that was an old school back in the 40s-50s. I have hunted this area for the past two years and hours on end with 5 different detectors (all manufactured since Jan. 2016). A very good hunt at this site, would maybe amount to maybe 1-4 coins including a wheatback. Using the Rutus and 11" DD, my first thoughts were to scan the area using a faster setting, hoping to pull good targets near trash while sacrificing a little depth. So, I chose a target area and went over it with reaction of 5, sensitivity of 60, mask of 2. I found one clad quarter and a piece or two of various junk.

Although the area was fairly trashy with a good deal of iron, there were some spacing between the heavy areas of trash. So, I opted to concentrate on hunting a little deeper. I then set the reaction to 2, and mask of 0, sensitivity of 75 and begin to slowly scan the same area. After digging a couple pieces of trash that gave a good signal (including a small piece of copper), the Rutus squealed out with that nice high tone I like to hear. The meter bounced a little but read fairly consistantly from 101-106. Digging down to 6 to 6.5 inches, revealed edges of a small shiny and round object. Pulling the coin out of the hole and rubbing it off revealed a really nice 1941 Merc which admittedly brought a smile from underneath all the beads of sweat. Sweet rewards...

Pictures are finds from 4 hunts over the past two weekends. The plates of clad coins included those found by myself and my Dad as well with his trusty White's 5900di.

Great first report on the Rutus! I've found silver in places where I've swung the AT-Pro but I always wonder if my swing was just sloppy and I never got the Pro over the coin.

But the Rutus does pull them out!

Congratulations on the Merc!

Still very enthusiastic about the Rutus. I. Own it for almost 4 months now.

Dug up a 1751 golden Coin, and two weeks a silver pocket watch. So Yes it brought me great things allready.

Ist my first Detector after using a T2 for a few weeks. This. Hodograph display is a great addition for starters and more advanced users.
That's why I have bought it... To. Guide me through the audio signals.

And... Yes it's a sensitive machine.
Especially on the higher frequencys and wet grass. With double D The concentric however is very quiet and less prone of false signals....but i have the feeling it doesn't reach as deep as the double. D.

I don't know if you seen the recommendation to tie the coil cable firm to the first stem? With elastic rubber bands?

It eliminates some end swing falsing.

What I really like is the combo of static and movement VDI.

Dug up a nickel coin of 15mm, (0.6 inch) diameter at 35cm (13.5 inches) . No VDI... But the further I dug a VDI came up.

It's a great machine with little flaws... But I name them just how sensitive the detector is.

The bang for the buck of this machine aint going to top any other.
Who offers a full packet of protection bags and a findbag in the manufacturers box. Let's stand alone a wireless transmitter at that pricepoint.
