So I'm new to the addiction and after a Dr Appt. I went to the beach for the first time. Got a half dozen coins and one funny one my buddy says it's a once in a lifetime find. He says it's a mint error scrap cent. This thing I thought was a dime until I noticed Lincoln and it's almost paper thin and sharp like a knife. Here's the photos I'd love some opinions on how rare it could be as according to my friend it's very rare because it has lust about the whole stamp on both sides and is perfectly round.

Your penny is just ground down by the sand and rocks at the beach... we find them all the time like that.

Hmm.. I thought that but other coins I found were either corroded or pitted from the salt water?

Because that's what she does with zinc pennies..

Your other one is copper..

My buddy who is well educated in coins says " If you can find a way to wear a penny down so it's paper thin without wiping out the design I'll eat my hat. It's just not possible. Grab a file or sandpaper or something and try it yourself. The flat background of the design on a regular penny is thicker than your coin. No way you can wear it that thin and still see the design." lol It is almost razor sharp :)

Mother nature does all sorts of things we cannot do ourselves, I hope your buddy is hungry, and likes hats!!

Here is a dime worn so thin it has holes, yet, magically you can still tell what it was...

If you remove material equally on all surfaces, the pattern will still remain..

What sort of hats does you buddy like the best? With mustard and kraut?

;) Just having some fun with ya, but it is simply a beach worn coin...

Your friend is wrong...

Looks like your buddy is eating his hat. That coin is not made by the mint like that sorry. Mother nature did that. I collect errors and die varieties and they are my specialty. I bet your buddy don't know what this is the year and name. In the winter I get boxes of cents and go through them and take out errors and die varieties.

It was too late last night to take a picture... I'm sure all of us who beach hunt have dozens of these coins... I did a roll of them and it took me like a 100 of them to make 1 roll of pennies ;)

Just as I suspected

Thanks so much for your expertise, that is why I came here to find out for sure. My gut feeling when I found it was that it had been sanded by the beach, no pun intended lol but where my friend was so adamant I had to put it out there. I just didn't have that heart pounding excitement in my gut when he was telling me how rare it was. So I guess you can always follow your gut instincts
See now I'm also glad I had joined this site when I got my detector :) So much for my new machine or telescope :( lol
I'll have to bring my buddy a hat of my choice to watch how he's going to eat it..lol just kidding Bud..

Don't think your buddy is as "well educated" on coins as he'd like you to believe.

If he is adamant about the coin... let him buy it from you... ask a lot then negotiate
