Random: fishing in the Philippines? Hard travel case for AT Pro?

Fishing in the Philippines

You might want to consider chartering one of the fishing boats for a day, or 1/2 day is relatively cheap over there , get one with shade and bring plenty of cold bottled water along , beer is cheap as well bring a few extra for the crew . We often charter them for some island hopping taking extended family for a outing. This would let you get out there with some of the bigger fish are farther away from the coast. Found a video of a foreigner chartering a boat and fishing in the Philippines you might like .https://www.bing.com/videos/search?...F66202C38A4B261191F2F66202C38A4B261&FORM=VIRE

This is a great suggestion, not only do you get on fish from the start, but you can pick the crews brain about fishing from the beach. What fish will be there and where, sizes, baits, lures etc. May even clue you in on a good local bait and tackle store. They're an invaluable source of information most times. Ask about tides as well. They may tell you something like, "only ever fish the incoming tide" or "fish off this point at an outgoing" or "don't even trouble yourself to fish dead low".

A lot of the time a boat owner and crew can make more money chartering out for the day than they can catching and selling fish , they will most likely help you clean your catch if you want and keep it on ice. This works out great for everyone they usally have good fishing gear , know the best areas , just bring a big cooler because it gets hot, for beverages and to keep the catch in.

Something else I remembered. During the time you are their, it will still be the rainy season. Many floods. Many mud slides in the mountains. You are going to Sagada, that in the Mountain Provence. Some of the roads up their are very nasty. Very sharp curves. Watch for mud on the road. If you slide off the mountain, good buy. Might take bays or longer before you are found. You won't be driving like a race car driver either. I took my wife on a trip up that way. I been on that trip on a mother cycle. In the car, a different story. For us to go 90 miles, it took 11 hours. Only one mud slide. The roads were up and down with very sharp curves. I don't think we hit 30 mph that trip through the mountain Provence. There are a lot of places you might want to stop and get some great pictures. Take pictures of the people too. They like having their picture taken. They think they will be a STAR in America.

Your adventures in the Philippines

Hope you will start a thread on here about you Philippines adventures and keep us posted with pictures from all the places you get to visit. Having never been to that area looking forward to hearing your impression of the people and places. Each area of the Philippine has its differences , neat things to see and do , would take a long time just to explore a small part of the over 7000 islands. So far I have explored mostly the central Philippines Bohol where my wife is from , Cebu with lots of really cool sights including a Spanish fort you can tour , and several of the smaller islands. On one of the smaller islands there was a stone Spanish watch tower , the locals were keeping chicken in it. I got to detect around the out side but came up empty handed. Would of been so cool to find a old Spanish coin or musket ball , or part of a old sword. Hope you really enjoy you adventure , I really love it over there.

Ken you just accurately described the facts about third world county conditions and practices around the world today. There are too many other scams and methods of ripping off foreigners to mention. I traveled these places for 20 years in my job and it's all too true. If anyone has doubts pull up the US STATE DEPT TRAVEL WARNING site. The info is current and true. Americans are number one on the target list. https://travel.state.gov/content/tr...eladvisories/philippines-travel-advisory.html

For saltwater (I hope you're not using such a light outfit for the brine) . Something in a 20 pound test line would suffice.
For lures, I'd take a couple, shallow swimming plugs, and a couple lead headed jigs with a bag or two of appropriately sized grub or curly tails. White or chartreuse color. I'd also bring along a few pre-made, 30 pound wire leaders at least 6 inches long. If you keep getting bit off you'll appreciate having them.
For the plugs, something in the 6 inch range will be appropriate I think. Bright silver or red and white. Make sure they're "for saltwater", heavier grade and sized hooks. If you intend to try bait, take some size 2/0, 3/0 stainless hooks and a few 2 or 3 oz weights. Again, I'm assuming you'll be using a heavier grade road/reel combo in the salt. You'll be breaking off 6 pound, if you get even a 5 pound reef fish, he'll be able to spool ya from the beach. Not saying you can't land a very large fish on very light tackle but there's a little more to it than just getting lucky. The right rod, knots, reel, line, spool capacity and fighting technique.
I don't know the common salt water species over there. But if I was going somewhere blind, this would be my bare minimum of equipment.

This is good info, thank you. To be clear, this won't be specifically a fishing trip, so I can't go all out. I just have my lightweight telescoping rod and reel that I'll bring, so I'll have to stick to light tackle. There have to be little sand bass-type fish in the surf, or other similar small fish in rocky areas. I don't know. Just like you said, I was thinking little plastic grubs, maybe some small jigs, and of course small hooks and stinkers for bait fishing. We'll see what happens.

Thank you for the suggestions.

I'll definitely share some pics when I return. Maybe a new thread if I bring the detector and make some good finds.

Would love to see your trip pictures even if you don't get to detect this trip. I am sure there area lot of members on here that have visited that area near Subic Bay and Clark Air base while in the service. Seeing pictures of long undetected beaches over there might make them want to go some time. Hope you have a great time on your visit over there.

Hey y'all. This is totally random, but I can't find much info online, so I thought I'd try here.

I'm going to the Philippines in September. Renting a car, and driving around Luzon for a month. Unfortunately I probably won't be treasure hunting, but I will bring my travel rod, as there are tons of lakes, rivers, streams, and of course the ocean. Light tackle, probably 6lb line.

For freshwater, I'll bring spinners, plastics, and maybe some topwater poppers. I have very little saltwater experience. What lures should I bring for just fishing from shore? Some areas will be sandy, some will be rocky. Any advice is appreciated!

If I do decide to bring the AT Pro, any advice for traveling with it? Do they make some kind of hard case for checking it on my flight?

I took my AT Pro to Florida recently, broke it down and it fit in my regular suitcase (checked bag--larger than carry on). You should be fine with it in your suitcase.
My wife is Filipino from Cebu. I spent 7 years traveling to the Philippines to visit her before I married her. I've been all over from north to south. Before that I spent years traveling to Thailand.
One thing you really do not want to do is drive. Really, do not do this. Far too much risk. It is sooooooooo much more comfortable hiring a driver and it is cheap to do----a no-brainer. You will thank yourself for it after you get there and realize what driving there entails. Heed the warnings from other posters, they know of what they speak.
On Luzon a drive north from Manila to Bagio is a good visit as is the drive southeast from Manila to the Taal Volcano. Corregidor is a must see IMHO and I spent one trip visiting every WW2 monument on the Bataan peninsula. Went all the way down to the zero marker at the start of the Death March. One of the monuments on Bataan is a giant cross, Mt Samat National Monument you can take an elevator 54 stories up and view both sides of the peninsula.
Interesting history there, the fighting was so intense that no vegetation survived, everything blasted to bare rock.
I know nothing of fishing fresh or salt around Luzon. I know Manila bay is polluted badly and supposedly if you fall into the Pasig river in Manila your body will dissolve so be mindful of pollution when fishing.
We usually fly straight to Cebu nowadays and try to take a side trip somewhere every time we go. Last April we took our side trip to Surigao City on Mindanao and from there went to Siargao to see the Cloud 9 surfing spot and do some island hopping by pump boat. It was great!
I'm not sure but I think the best offshore fishing in the Philippines may be off of Mindanao. Very deep water, they do alot of tuna fishing there.
One of my go to websites for Philippine info is the "LivinginCebu" forums. Incredible amount of info there. Best of luck to you.

Edit to add: I almost forgot I got into metal detecting because my sister in law in Cebu asked us to send her a AT Pro. They are all hunting for a Japanese gold hoard over there. Yamashitas gold or something like that. So we bought one and sent it to her and then I bought one and became hooked.

I will have to check out your website , we normally fly in to Cebu as well ,then take a fast ferry boat to Bohol. They just opened a new International Airport on Bohol to replace the old small one there.

On my first day in the Philippines I took the supercat from Cebu to Bohol. Went all the way around the island (hired driver and van) and saw all the sights, Chocolate hills, Tarsirs, hanging bridge, blood pact, native house, etc..etc... Had four very nice Pinoy ladies as travel companions, one of which was to be my future wife. I like Bohol!

Edit to ad: We did the Lobac River cruise. I would love to have a bahay kubo somewhere along that river. Fabulous.

Our house over there is close to the Lobac River Cruse which are lots of fun and lots of good food. They are adding some new speed boat to travel between the islands here is a link to them.https://cebudailynews.inquirer.net/...O9TD61kSwE7QfDwOROOkTfRjydf44KxH_21t-KPIfg4vI

I have not detected in the PI yet but now looking forward to do so, not so much for Japanese gold treasure but WW2 relic hunting.

On my Corregidor trip there was a local selling big old silver coins. I bought one and now wish I had bought all he had. I'll dig it out and see what it is, don't remember off the top of my head.

Looking for Japanese treasure in the Philippines requires a government permit (they also take a nice chunk of the find, you also have to share with the land owner ) on the other hand beach detecting is no problem , no permits and little competition . The public beaches tend to be very trashy usally no trash service so all trash buried in the sand . Now nice tourist resorts are a diffrent story entirely they keep their beaches clean of trash. Lots of rich Americans , Australians , Europeans and now a newly upper class of Chinese that like to show off their Jewelry and often wear it to the beach. Many of the old large silver coins were dumped in Manila bay to keep them out of Japanese hands when they invaded the Philippines Some were recovered by the Japanese during the war, more by American divers after the war , but a lot still down in the mud and sand in the bay. Depending on the date and which mint it was struck the value varies some of the more rare coins go for big dollars. You can see a lot of the coins on e-bay and what they are asking for them. I have had a detector with me on two trips so far , found coins but nothing of value yet. A good site to see Philippines coins from Spanish to current and what they are made of is https://en.numista.com/catalogue/philippines-1.html
