Not a dumb question at all. A lot of people here have tip covers on their PP's I don't as I don't dig with my pin pointer. The ones that do probably leave them on all the time.

No cap used, but I did coat my pp tip in this. One year and it's still there.

I don't dig with my pinpointer either, but there's a reason coils come with covers, and a reason they make screen covers. It's just an added layer of security for your investment. Not mandatory, but I use them just to keep my gear in like new condition. To answer your question more directly, the cover can stay on while in use. Good luck out there!

I was surprised at the number of youtube detectorists that dig with their pinpointer. I wouldn't treat my equipment like that.

Copy that! My opinion is the PP is only for getting you very close, not for digging. I move a tiny amount of dirt around from time to time but jabbing and digging......NOT!
Agreed...I often wonder how people wear a whole through the end of the pinpointer?

Since I spend 99% of my time on the beach, mine is lightly scuffed from moving some sand. I dig with my scoop, I brush through the tailings if I don’t see the object.
