pinpointer yes or no!!

90% of my retrievable targets are with my PP and Probe.
Leaving the remaining 10% on visual retrieval.

About 65% is retrieved without digging a plug.
Leaving 35% searching in the hole.

Handheld or In-line PPers retrieval is 100% faster.
Plugs and Probing or Popping sites are neat and clean.

If my Cortes says it's there, my Treasuremate will find it.
Two Detectors, one for searching and one for digging.

I agree. Get a harbor freight for $15.00 and try it with that. Then if you like it you can get a expensive one and go from there. I have 3 now after years without one. I still use my HF one the most.

Being a "newbie" I can already see the value of a pinpointer. When I bought my F5 I added the Bounty Hunter PP for $5.00 .... and for $5 it was pretty good. The range is not that deep... but that is good as far as I am concerned, it lets me know I am right on top of the target.

I've read excellent things about the Garrett PP..... I'm saving my clad to buy one! :)

So... from a newbie... I say get one, I love my $5 PP ... can't imagine how much better the Garrett must be :)

Without a Pin Pointer:

You're walking around walking around 'beep' 'beep' you found something. You put your metal detector on the ground, squat down, and start digging. 'Dig' 'Dig' 'Dig' you can't find anything so you stand back up and grab your metal detector and swipe it over the hole to see if the target is still there. 'Beep' 'Beep' it is. You put your metal detector back down and squat 'Dig' 'Dig' 'Sweat' 'Dig' you still can't find anything.

You stand back up and grab your metal detector and swipe it over the hole again to see if the target has slipped through your hands or is still in the hole. 'Beep' 'Beep' there it is ...but you placed the pile of dirt so close to the hole that you don't know if it's on the side of the hole near the pile or in the pile itself. Oh wait...there is your digging tool you left too close to the hole also so maybe it's setting your metal detector off too. You bend over and throw your tool out of the way. 'Beep' 'Beep' ok it's either in the pile or on the side of the hole closest to the pile.

You squat back down and start 'Sift' Sift' 'Sift' nope not there. 'Dig' 'Dig' 'Dig' ...well I'll be! It's not there either. You stand back up and swing your detector around again 'beep' 'beep' ...yep it's there alright so you squat back down. 'Sift' 'Sift' 'Dig' 'Dig' ...where is it?

Now you are getting a little tired and decide to pick your metal detector up grabbing the rod swinging the end around over the hole. 'Where is that stupid thing?' you say to yourself. Then you decide to dig some more and oops you dropped the control box to your metal detector on the ground a little harder than you are comfortable with. Now you're really getting agitated.

Eight minutes pass of this until wala...look a piece of rusty wire. Now that was worth it wasn't it. After this you are so disheartened you decide to cut the hunt short and head back to the house stepping over on the way home old civil war buckles, mercury dimes, and a old spanish treasure horde you are too aggrivated to look for.

With a Pin Pointer:

'Beep' 'Beep' you found something. Squat down 'dig' 'dig' 'pin point' wala a crappy piece of rusty wire. Get up put the wire in your pocket. 'Beep' 'beep' you found something else. Squat down 'dig' 'dig' 'pin point' wala an old spanish treasure horde. Retire.

13rannon summed it up perfectly. Deffinetly worth it if you can get one. Speeds detecting way up and way less frustrating!

13rannon speaks the truth.... I thought he was writing a bio on my first few experiences... the fun part is that it was my 17 year old son who found a 1799 Reales!

So it is possible to find that Spanish silver! My cheap Bounty Hunter PP works great... can't wait to get a Garrett. Do yourself a favor and get a PP :)

If you think the Bounty hunter is good, you will pee yourself happy when you get a garrett:lol:

What I would really look into is the Sunray Pin Pointers. Crevias had one on his metal detector and it worked out great. For the E-Trac and SE Pro the Sunray comes attached on a all new rod. No straps or nothing. It's already attached to the rod and ready to be installed.

I said earlier that I would not hunt without my pinpointer. After reading some of the posts.....I wondered why some of you would not use one:?:.

After some thought, I have changed my mind.

If hunting in the sand and using a plastic digger/scoop, I could see how a pinpointer could take more time when all you have to do is wave the scoop over the coil to see if the coin is in it.

But, I mainly hunt in harder packed dirt and have to use a metal digger. After making my cut and folding the plug back it is sometimes hard to detect if the coin is in the plug or in the hole. Without a pinpointer I would have to either cut a circle plug and wave it over the coil or pick up the MD to wave over the plug and hole. I don't like cutting circle plugs, because the grass will often die.

So, if you mainly hunt sand then you could get better value with a good sand scoop. But, if you hunt dirt I feel that a pinpointer is a must have.

My opinion is the same. Hunting in sand is a breeze compared to turf. I do not leave home without mine as a beachcomber would not leave home without his sand scoop. The soil type 30U Plymouth and I dig in is brutally hard when dry.

I use one called Periscope. While it can be bulky the wand is very sturdy and I once pinpointed a dime down 11" (a 1914 barber) It was under a root. Could never have found it without the probe.

Well for me its not so much a matter of not knowing exactly where the target is, but seeing it. I'm not sure a pinpointer would detect some of the tiny stuff I find in the first place.

I've found bitssmaller than those with my Bullseye II......I say they make a BIG difference in the time it take to recover a target:D

This is like saying "I have a radioshack detector and it works fine. I can't imagine how much better the Garrett must be."

Night and day difference. The Sunray's are even better.

Beach, No; dirt, Yes. Get a harbor frieght cheapie and try it out. Do not recommend paying $100+, go to harbor freight & order one.

Waste of time & money for me & just another thing to have to carry around. Never had a problem pinpointing with any of the Tesoro's I have had. Steve.
