Yesterday I got an email request to look for a lost ring. The husband asked me to look for a ring his wife had lost several years ago. I advised him I had another search to do and would come to him when I finished. I told him I had no idea how big the first yard was nor how long it might take and so could not tell him what time to expect me. He indicated he was fine with that.

I arrived at the first location exactly on time. But nobody answered the door so I searched the front yard but since the gate to the back was bungee corded shut, I did not go back there. I then drove to the second location.

Again, nobody answered the door. Since it is an hour drive to them, I again began to search the front yard. I found some interesting brass objects which I believe may be parts of an old brass bed and some can slaw but no ring.

I got an interesting signal and was engaged in digging the target when I noticed a lady coming down the sidewalk. She was dressed in shorts and a tee shirt but was barefoot, carrying a couple of shopping bags and had a poodle on a leash. I thought it was odd that she had shopping bags on a Sunday particularly since she was barefoot and there are no stores in the area. She also seemed shocked to see me and inquired what I was doing. I explained I was metal detecting and she asked why. I answered I was looking for a lost object and she demanded to know what. I calmly explained I was not at liberty to tell her that since I try to protect the privacy of my patrons. She became quite indignant and insisted that I tell her since I am in HER YARD.

WTH??

I tell her I am looking for her lost gold ring. She looked quite puzzled and I asked her if her husband had not informed her that he had invited me to look for it. She looked like she didn't believe me so I produced my cell phone and showed her our exchange of emails. She then relaxed and told me she doesn't believe the ring is even in the yard.

I then told her that I was being affected by the heat and would be leaving as soon as I finished the area I was working in but would be happy to return if she liked. Later I was contacted by her husband. He said he didn't hear the doorbell and did not realize I was there. He also asked me to return tomorrow and I agreed.

It's kind of funny now, but this could have turned out quite differently. She could have called the police instead of confronting me. She could have even pulled a gun on me which could have had disasterous results, including me having to change my pants. :laughing

Still can't believe he didn't bother to tell her.

 That is an interesting story he probably wanted to surprise her in case you found the ring before she came form wherever it was she came from still strange bare feet, shopping bags, no store around huh

What are you doing out here in my front yard?.... "Due to Privacy constraints, I am not at the Liberty to tell you"

Oh Man!:laughing: Digging up somebodies Front yard! Great! I'm gonna use THAT one!

Cool story , wierd any lady would go shopping barefoot , unless she is into martial arts and got ready to attack when she saw you diggin !
,,,,,HH

Got to say that dude has some balls having you hunt when his wife might be around. I would have waited until I knew she would be gone all day.

When the guy didn't answer the door, I would have called him again rather than just start digging.

Me too, but he did drive an hour o get there.

I wouldn't detect someones yard until I touched base with them again, THAT day before diggin, just to avoid a property owner askign what I am doing, like happened here... avoid the awkward confrontations by simply letting the property owner know you are there! LOL

Now at that point in our conversation, I did not know it was her yard. I thought she was just being nosy.

Now I did hear from the man last night. He apologized and said while he doubted I would find the ring it was worth an attempt. He asked me to return today which I did and finished the hunt. The ring wasn't there but he gave me three new leads in his neighborhood and offered me access to three properties he owns.

So all well, that turns out well.

So you were invoking Detectorist/Client Privilege?

Interesting story. Well written. You have more patience with gripers than I do !!

I would have done the same as far as telling the lady it was not her concern. There is a crazy/nosy lady in my parents neighborhood and she saw me detecting in an old empty lot and she went to look around and see what I was doing after she saw me leave. Some people think that everything around them is their business.Even when it isn't.:dumb:
