Old Rusty Handgun?

I'm not commenting on whether it's real or not, but just want to point out that pot metal doesn't rust. Has to have iron to rust.

Very good point, I should have simply said cheap toy pistol instead of pot metal. Anything that would form FE2O3.

Toy gun for sure.

As pointed out, real guns don't have iron or steel grips or rust like that.

It is a cap gun. Real guns don't deteriorate like that. Sorry

Not really. The metal is in better shape. NO idea what happened to your gun BEFORE it got tossed. Maybe an overloaded round blew it apart? I really can't tell if your gun is real. Will take your word for it.

The metal on his is absolute trash. I have found over 100 guns. I stand by my statement, His gun is a toy.

I wasn't saying it was real what I was saying even real guns can come out the ground looking horrible

Haven't the real ones you've found come out of the water? Steel and iron fare much better under water because less oxygen to cause rust... The is a chance under all the rust you could still make out a company name after electrolysis cleaning...

I'm with scuba on this, a pot metal toy, since the trigger guard is gone. Also the circular depression on the side would indicate it was cast versus machined, which would also lead me to believe it is not real.

Ok, "I'm with scuba on this, it is a toy".

Apparently it depends on what is in the pot metal, read this;

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pot_metal

Low melting point metals, NON FERROUS, a SMALL amount of iron might get into the mix by accident, is what your link said. A small amount of iron that slipped into the mix unseen would not produce the amount of rust on that gun.
Bottom line is that pot metal does not contain any ferrous metal except rarely and not by intention.

That^

Even stainless steel is way more ferrous than any pot metal, and although some will rust a little, nothing like the find posted...

yeah wonder if used in crime. Thoroughly interested in the gun but it doesnt look the same as the picture of the raven though. Try something else maybe a 25 mm or a .38 or maybe even a nine mm. Definatley one of them but not a 44 or something else..

There isnt enough left of that gun to give up any evidence whether it was used in a crime or not. If you turned it in to the police they would probably just toss it in a trash can. If cleaned up you may be able to identify what kind of gun it is but aside from that its just a gun shaped hunk of rust. Cool find though.

Wouldn't electrolysis be a bad idea if there was gun powder in there?
I actually really don't know. But dang that would scare me. A mini pipe bomb maybe
Anyone else?

Real guns are NOT made out of cheap iron that rusts like that. They are made out of higher grade steel.

No it is not pot metal. Pot metal under ground and underwater breaks up and is absolutely trash. I have found many pot metal guns that fell apart in both places and kept only the handles. I have found some keepers though.

Another tell tale sign it is a toy is the metal grips. You had to get to the inner workings of a real gun.

I will let this thread go to the speculators though. Just like the threads of the guy finding tons of clad every time he goes out.

If anybody can show me a picture of a real gun with metal grips I will gladly eat my words.

I, for one, never speculated that it was a real gun and stated that. I merely pointed out that it was not pot metal.
