One time , a few years ago, I decided to listen patiently to a sales pitch. Instead of hanging up on them as I normally do. And each time the sales person hit a pause, I would say "no thankyou". Whereupon they launch into more of their script. And each time they'd pause, I'd repeat "no thankyou", without hanging up.
They are pretty crafty with trying to get you to tell them WHY you don't want to buy their pitch. And all I would say is: " ....Because I'm not comfortable with it". Whereupon they launch into more script.
Finally, after 10 or 15 minutes, when the guy was starting to repeat script lines from the beginning, I asked him "Why don't you just call the next person on your list, instead of wasting time with me?". He confided in me that his system only calls OUT. It does not allow HIM to hang up. So he advised ME to hang up, in order to end the call.
I told him that I could never THINK of doing such a rude thing, as hanging up on him. And I could tell he was attempting to let their be long pauses (which their computerized system interprets as a hang up). So any time there was a pause, I would perpetually interject "hellos?".
This went on for nearly an hour ! The poor fellow could not hang up on me, d/t his computer system. Eventually he had to have a supervisor come on the line, who ... apparently knew how to over-ride the system and hang up on the line. I felt so bad for their wasted hour
