It was fairly common with Confederate Soldiers in the Civil War. Many of the Soldiers were avid Bass and Crappie fishermen before the war broke out. The demand for Lead to make bullets really cut into the availability of Sinkers for the soldiers that liked to relax on the banks of the beautiful rivers in the afternoons to fish after heavy fighting during morning battles. They would use the knife they carried into battle to shear the bottom ring off one of their bullets and fold it over their fishing line as a sinker. In the evenings after a dinner of freshly caught fish, the soldiers would discuss the next days battle plans and if there were any fishing holes near the battlefield for the next days fishing and dinner. The spoon/fork handle is evidence of fine dining before the next morning battle.
Great Find!
